Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - February 2006
We hit stride this month and averaged a little more then a call a dayfor February. We
had 31 total runs for the month. There were 15 incidents in the Village and 14 calls in the
town. We responded mutual aid twice, once to Ithaca and once to Dryden for a request
fon the FAST Tearn. This month we saw a huge disparity in the types of calls. We ran 21
EMS calls and only 8 fire calls. This is very unusual for us. The split in EMS versus fire
calls has historically hovered at a 50/50 split. This seems to be the trend across the
country these days with EMS taking the lead in the fire service. We continue to push our
members to take EMT classes in the area and are pushing our current EMTs to take the
more advanced EMS classes such as Intermediate EMT and Critical Care Technician.
We picked up with training last month. Everybody is back from break and in house
training has started again in eamest. We have tailored many of our in-house hainings to
be hands on and scenario based, especially our EMS trainings. Our Rescue Director,
Jason Gleghorn, is very aware of the need to make EMS trainings hands on and scenario
based to make training realistic. He does a great job with this and our EMS prograna is as
strong as it has ever been. We instituted a station/truck maintenance night into our
training schedule recently. This allows all of our members to put their hands on every
piece of equipment on the trucks at least once a month. We clean all the equipment and
then clean out the comparhents on the truck. It makes every firefighter appreciate all
the work it takes for the bunkers to maintain the equipment and makes them iesponsible
for keeping the equipment in working order. We currently have six members in the Fire
Fighter 1 class here in Tompkins County. This number represents the last of the previous
Recruit Class that needed to take this class to fulfill their first year requirments with the
departnent. They are all doing very well.
We have a healthy waiting list for the next remuit class that will run this fall. We have a
waiting list of 25 people. Our plan is to have a potential recruits barbeque at the station
in early May to give these candidates a look around the station and to
-eor*"
that they
maintain interest and give us an idea ofjust how many of them are seriously interested in
volunteering. Assistant Chief Marshall Stocker is working tirelessly to keep our
membership rolls strong. He is also working very hard to find community members
" H E,LP P RE\/E,I/T F [R,ES''
interested in the votrunteer opportunities at 194 Ftreasant Grove Road. We continue to
have a very deep and strong student pootr but we are not getting the interest frorr the
members of,the fire district.
Rescue 241 contfurues to be a project we are workfurg on. Bid opening for the rescue
truck is schedutred for ApriX l3b. We hope to move this project forward at that time. The
fire station is in good working order. We had two bunkers move out of their rooms this
past rnonth and two new bunkers move in. Prior to the move in we repainted the rooms
and ensured that the carpets were cleaned and any nninor darnage from the past five years
of occupancy was repaired.
Fire Department elections wiltr take place on April 4th. We have a strong slate of of{icers
for tho corning year. All candidates meet the requirements set down in the Job
Descriptions from Fire Council. At this tirne I will remain the Chief for at least two more
years. Marshall Stocker and Matt Ab'binanti are running for the Assistant Chiefs
positions. We plan on having one vacant chiefs position this year. We currently have
five candidates for four Lier$enants positions. Altr the candidates have the required
quelifications f,or the positions. '!Ve will have a slate of officers for the Boards approval
ut*S with the re$une$ of,the nsw officers for the Board at the April 17tr naeeting. . The
Annual Banquet and Installation of Officers will be at the Country Club on Aprit" 22"o .
Sadly one of our own passed away in February. Les Goehner, our station manager, died
February 27's after a fight with cancer. Les took care of the old station and then the new
station since 199tr. He ran the work crews from the county probation departnrent. Les
oonsistenttry looked after all aspects of, station maintenance for us and was an invaluable
tool for me as chief. Not being around when the station was built, all I had to do was ask
Les about the ins and otrts of the station and he had all the answers. We will miss his
smiling presence at the station greatly. Our members went to calling hours and the
firneral to represent the Village and the Fire Departuent.
