HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Monthly Report - January 2006.PDFC AYU GA f{ EN GHT S F I RE D EP,ART]V4 E,I{T 194 Fleasant Grove Road nthaca, NY 14E50 (507) 257-2317 Fetrruary 9,2006 Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report - January 2006 We had a very busy start to 2006. We began the year by running 47 calls in January. There were 24 calls the Village and 16 calls in the town this month. Unlike December, whon we ran no calls for mutual aid, we hadT requests from our neighbors for support in January. We went to Ithaca twice, Lansing 3 times and Dryden twice. One of the calls to Dryden was to provide a FAST team for the Dryden Fire Department during a structure fire in the Village of Dryden. There were 26 EMS calls and 14 fire calls. One of our goals for the fire department this year is to let otn neighbors know that we are here if needed. We are in the unique and enviable position of having members at the fire station at all times of the day or night, With the difficulty that many departments have staffing appraratus during the day more and more we are being asked to lend aid. We are very proud of this. At all times when we respond to mutual aid calls we leave members at our stalion to handle calls in ow own district. We are very lucky to have this ability. Many deparlments are lucky to staff an engine with a driver and one other person and we average over 12 firefighters per call. Training last month was a little slower then usual due to the holiday break. We did have our annual day long training January 28ft. This all day training slssion included blood borne pathogens training that we are required to do every year, orr annual PPD and hepatitis shots and CPR original and recertifrcation for all of our members. The training was attended by every active member of the deparfrnent. Upcoming trainings for February include several trainings to be held in our acquired structure at Warren Real- estate. We plan to go into the building and practice overhaui techniques which include pulling ceilings and exposing interior walls to check for fire extension. We will also be able to get on the roof of the building and practice roof ventilation. Without an actual building to practice on, roof ventilation training is very hard to do so we are very lucky to have this opportunity. ,, H ELP P REVE,AIT F tr R.ES'' We are working towards securing bids for the new rescue truck that we plan to have built this spring. V/e may run into a problem with acquisition of the base vehicle for the project. We are looking to purchase a 2006 Chevy Suburban but may not be able to get our hands on one. It seems that in January 20A6 they stop bui1ding2006 vehicles and we may have to wait until April when the start producing the 2007 rnodetrs. We are optimistic that we will be able to move forward with this prcject. The station is in great shape these days. We had the bay doors serviced this month. They seemed to have sorne gaps in the seals and the tr"acks needed to be serviced. All this is done in hopes of sealing the station as much as possible to save on heating costs. 'Ihe tnlcks are working well and they too are being serviced regularly to prevent costly repairs on preventive maintenance problems. Our bunking rooms are full. Lt. Scott Martling has purchased a house in the district and is soon moving out of the station. FirefighLter Joe Palin will be moving into the room. Joe is an interior firefighter, is a member of the FAST team and plans to be with the department for at least two more years. Fire Council has forecasted our potentiai turnover for the ne>rt five years and we are actively working on our next recruit class to be held in the fall. We have identified the need to start running two recruit classes a year for the next two years to increase membership. This is an ongoing self evaluation process that we do. Assistant Chief Marshall Stocker has been in charge of membership needs assessments for a couple of years now and has done an amazirrg job of recruihnent. Sincerely, .A fy''.+ "{.' / .f ,/-*-\ ;tt '-/' '' ,:!/ l{ ,,{' {irt',/ :! X;yt.;r.Y -/" { ;j v Ged'rge Tanrborelle Fire ChieflFire Superintendent EMER.GENCY CAI,LSt 47 TOTAL CALLS YEAR.
