HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Monthly Report - Sept, 2009.PDFC,4Y U GA {-[ EI GT{T S F I R E, D E PARTIV{ EAIT 194 Fleasant Grove R.oad {thaca, I{Y 14850 (607) 257 -2377 October 8, 2009 Honorable James Gilmore Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report - September,2009 The paced picked up again in September with 57 calls logged for the month. There were 33 EMS calls and 24 fue runs. We had36 incidents in the Village of Caluga Heights, 16 incidents in the Town of Ithaca and we were requested mutual aid 5 times. As stated in last months report, we see an increased number of fire alarm activations after school starts back up at Cornell. Many calls for dust in detector heads and burnt food causing alarm activations. Most of these calls require liule time spent on scene. Very often we spend more time educating the building residents on the requirement to evacuate the building every time an alarm is activated until the building is cleared and the system is reset. Very often while investigating alarm activations we find residents sleeping or working in the building while the alarm is active. We try our best to discourage this behavior. Our new recruits are up and running with the department at this time. We accepted 11 new members to the department in September. We have already run the first two recruit training sessions as of the time of this report with the third session scheduled for October 31't. Several of the recruits are in the fall Firefighter 1 class and are doing well. All the recruits from the last class are done with their probationary checklists and are working on their interior checklists. We are pleased with the performance of both groups. We have several trainings scheduled through the month of October including our annual SCBA recertification that every member of the department is required to go through. We will also be doing our required annual fit testing for all members for their SCBA masks. Our annual Open House is taking place on October ITth at the fire station. Many local agencies are planning to attend the event and set up displays. At this time we have the Cayuga Heights Police, the New York State Police with the rollover simulator, the Tompkins County Sheriffs Department will be bringing their off road vehicles, Guthrie Air is bringing a helicopter and several other displays and demonstrations will be set up by our members for the event. Flyers are being sent out to the local schools and we hope for good weather for the day. The fire company provides grilled cheese, hot dogs and drinks for the event. This is a sreat dav for the department. This event falls at the same ,, Td ELP P R.EVE,]VT F tr RE,S" time we start going into the schools for fire prevention which is a great way to get the word out to kids in our district about fire prevention and safety. We picked up the new vehicle for the fire deparlment in late September. We saved $555.00 by picking the vehicle up ourselves while a group of us were in New York City for a memorial run. The vehicle is currently at Admiral Specialty Vehicles in Danby getting all the equipment installed at this time. We hope to have the vehicle back and in service for the Open House next week. At this time L23l is out of service in Horseheads for wananty paint work. The vendor E-One has had issues with their paint on many of their trucks produced around the time L231 was built. This continues to be a wananty issue and we were told that they have figured out the problem and that this will hopefully be the last time we need to have this work done. Everlthing else seems to be going just fine at the station.
