HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Monthly Report - Aug 2009.PDFSeptember 8,2009 Honorable James Gilmore Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Reporl - August, 2009 We slowed down a little in the month of August and ran "only" 37 calls. This still averages more then a call a day. We had 21 EMS runs and 16 fire calls. It was again a routine month with a mix of fire and EMS calls. As shown in the attached run log and as stated in previous reports we do see a large number of calls in the sunlmer for alarm activationi caused by construction dust setting of alarm systems. We do advise contractors to take extra precautions when working in homes with residential alatm systems. As the school year starts the construction dust calls diminish replaced by r-r.,-.rou, calls for activated alarms in multi unit dwellings caused by burnt food and steam from showers. As the fall rolls along we have also historically answered late night calls for activated alarms in fratemities during events caused by many different activities from innocent dust to fire extinguisher fights in the hallways. For these incidents we work closely with the cal.uga Heights Police and cornell Fraternity and Sorority Affairs to ensure that the incidents are kept to a minimum' Training will pick up this fall with all of our members returning from summer break and with the fall recruit class starting. On September 2nd we took the trucks down to the burn tower and did some live fire evolutions to get everybody comfortable with live fire and where the equipment is on the trucks again. On September 8tn we will be having training on the new Thermal Imaging Camera that we purchased in June. At this training members will leam about the new camera as well as some search techniques using the camera that we picked up in Baltimore last summer. We will have our first Fall Recruit Class on September 19'h. This training starts in the classroom in the morning where the new members learn about the department and are given the book of SOPs that they are expected to know as they move through the training process. The afternoon of the first aay ls spent issuing turnout gear and pagers and familiarization with the fire trucks and Ueginning skills with hoses and hydrants. The second and third sessions are scheduled fc,i early and lat October. We also have our arutual SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) Recertification scheduled for mid Oetober. Every member of the department is iequired to recertify annually on air packs. We are looking forward to a busy year of training at the station.
