HomeMy WebLinkAboutSpeed Sign for the Village Aug 8, 2009.PDFAugust 8,2009 To: VCH Trustees, Chief Boyce From: Diana Riesman Re Speed Sign for Village Last week -- I spoke with Ken Karoglanian who Jeff Frisbie kindly put me in touch with. Ken owns Crossroads Highway Supply. We talked about different possibilities for speed signs. Apparently, the one I saw on Triphammer in Lansing near the Pyramid Mall is an older model and not being made anymore. Some people felt it was too small. Last week, however, I did, see a similar small screen sign on Rte. 13S as you approach the gas station near Purity. It was affixed directly under the actual existing 30 mile per hour limit speed sign. Ken told me about a number of different models, one approx. $3700. I have a copy of the infb he sent. The poles are not included in that price, though regular traffic poles work perfectly fine for the sign and cost $30. apiece. The sign is battery-operated. The appealing aspect of this sign is that it not only tells you how fast you were going as you were driving by, but it also registers how many cars have gone by and the time of day. This information is potentially very valuable to the police department, to the Planning Board for any work on a comprehensive plan and to the walkability committee who are exploring safer routes to Boynton and the highschool. In fact, when Brent, Fred Cowett met with Jonathan Kanter, the Planning Director, for the Town of lthaca, Jonathan said it would be very helpful and central to moving forward, to have some figures about traffic between 7:45am and 9am on Wyckoff and Kline etc. to present to the schools and the Town Planning Committee etc. This speed, # of cars and time of day information is stored on the machine and easily read off the machine with a computer and Blue Tooth adapter. It also can be down-loaded wirelessly. Ken also told me that Safer Routes to School have a grantprogram that covers up to half the amount of this machine. Ken called me back last Friday to give me the name of the woman at the Dept. of Transportation in Syraouse -- Jutrie Bednar -- and tr will be contacting her to see about the potential for a grant.
