Honorable James Gilmore
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - July, 2009
We had a very busy month in July with a total of 50 calls. There werc 29 calls in the
Village of Cayuga Heights, 16 calls in the Town of lthaca and 5 mutual aid calls" We had
26 EMS runs and 24 fire calls. For the large number of calls run this month most of them
were routine. Again the majority (by one run) were EMS calls. On our reports we only
list the number on the Pre-hospital Care Report (PCR). This is to ensure the privacy of
those treated by the fire department so there are no details listed in the report on these
calls. In the summer months we are dispatched many times to homes with automatic
alarrn systems that are set off by contractors. Dust from construction and intemrptions in
the phone and power to homes causes transmission of alarms to the 911 center' We
respond to these calls and request the contractors to make notification to the 911 center
prior to starling work so that we don't have to put all of our apparatus on the road for
ihese alarms. All calls were covered in a timely matter even with our "summer staffing".
In July we were able to get a couple of cars for extrication training. In the past we were
able to regularly get cars from the towing companies in the area for extrication practice
but with the recent rise in scrap metal prices we have been having difficulty getting cars.
FF Pat Miller was able to talk with a friend of his and got two vehicles delivered to the
station for practice. We practice gaining access to wrecked vehicles with our hydraulic
tools as well as hand tools. Six of the department's officers traveled to Baltimore for the
Fire Expo in July. Four of us were able to adjust our work schedules and traveled to
Baltimore on Wednesday night and were able to take three complete days of training at
the expo, the other two traveled Thursday moming and took two full days of training.
This training allows us to keep up to date with the new techniques in firefighting, new
equipment that is available, the latest updates on apparatus specifications and several of
us took classes on new street drugs, advanced airway management and trauma on the
EMS side of the expo training. The expo is a great way to keep up to date.
Our fall membership drive will be starting in late August. We have set down the dates
for the recruiting process as well as the training dates for the fall class. The last week of
August and the first week of September we will be actively recruiting on campus and in
the community. We already have a list of potential new members, several of these
,, IIELP P REVE,IVT F T RES''
prospects already have firefighter training or are EIvITs, who are coming to Cornell. We
will
-have
a prospective recruit dinner August 27tn to bring those interested to the fire
station for a talk on expectations and a tour of the station. We will accept and screen
applications over the next two weeks and then hold interviews to bring these people in for
u io.mat sit down interview with a panel of members. From these interviews we will
come up with a list of prospects and then vote them into the department at a company
meeting on September l3'fi. We will start the training the following Saturday and
continue with their training through October. We are looking at a potential class size of
fifteen new recruits.
The station is in good shape. We will be replacing some of the aging hose reels in the
truck bays in August. a[ of tne heavy trucks had their annual pump testing done in July
and all tiucks passed. We did have an issue with 8202 at the end of July. It had a bad
solenoid and had a hard time shifting from pump gear back to road gear. We resolved
this issue with our repair shop and things are back in working order. L23l will be going
out of service in August to have wamanty paint work done on the officer's side of the
truck. We had this same issue last year with some bubbling in the paint at the welds on
the side of the truck. This work was covered under warranty and we noticed recently that
the bubbling occurred again. We will continue to ensute that this issue is taken care of
with warranty coverage.
After nine years of living at the fire station Lt. Joe Lisi is moving out of the station' He is
staying in the area and *itt rtiit be an active member of the deparlment. Fire Council
,""!irr"d several applications for bunking from active members. We reviewed these and
have placed FF David Sorenson in the vacant bunker slot. David is a paramedic and
firefighter. He holds several national level firefighting and homeland security training
certifications. He will be cleared on driving all the apparatus by the end of December.
He is a nice fit for the bunking position'
We are excited for the fall. Having all of our members back after the summer and
bringing in new members alwgys nyakes the fall a gteat time at the station.

Dispatched by TC911 to meet with CHPD to shut down a hydrant. Arrived on scene to find a hydrant flowing a moderate amount of water
(aboutl/Sththecapacityoftheleftconnection) intoatrenchthathadbeendugfromthehydranttothemainandthendownthemain. The
water had undermined the dirt placed to cover the trench, and when Officer Manning (CHPD) drove over the trench the road gave way,
forming a sink hole. Officer Manning's car was undamaged. PD contacted Bolton Point and got the o.k. from the person on call (Greg) to
close off the hydrant. We closed the hydrant and replaced the sidecap and water began bubbling up from the pool that had formed at the
base of the hydrant. A Cayuga Heights DPW member arrived on scene and stated he believed there may be a leak at the stem of the
hydrant and that he and crew would take care of the problem. Cleared from scene by CHPD and situation left in the care of CHPD and
DPW. Cayuga Heights unit242 returned to service.
