There were 19 calls in the Village of Caluga Heights, 13 calls in the Town of Ithaca andT mutual aid calls. We had 16 EMS runs and 2j fire calls. On June 16th we were dispatched to a working fire at Dicks Sporting Goods at the Shops at Ithaca Mall. L231 andB203 responded immediately with full crews. E202 responded a short while later. L231 arrived on scene with Asst. Chief Abbinanti and found flames coming from the roof of Dicks. The ladder was quickly put up and crews went to the roof and found a pile of debris buming. The crew quickly eitinguished the flames and ensured that there was no extension of the fire into the struciure of the building. While doing overhaul they discovered material that led them to believe that the fire may have been intentionally set. Lt. Lisi who is a certified state fire investigator determined that the fire was suspicious in nature and working with an investigator from the Ithaca Fire Depaftment and the Tornpkins County Sheriffs Department did a complete investigation that led to the arrest of several people on arson charges. Later in June there were two days of severe weather that caused a spike in our call volume. Storms like these which produce high winds and heavy rain usually lead to increased call numbers for hazardous conditions. All calls were handled in a timely manner and even with much of our apparatus committed to the call at the mall we always had a crew standing by able to respond to calls in our district if needed. We did a couple of fun trainings in June. The first was our bi-annual road rally. At this training we take the trucks around the village with different drivers and officers and have our firefighters find difficult to addresses in the village. We do this training at least twice a year to refresh everybody's memory on roads and addresses. We do this as a race but don't allow any driver to exceed the speed limit in any way. During this training we also practice skills such as opening hydrants and finding fire department connections, fuel rhrrt offr and knox boxes at specific locations. Everybody has a great time at this training and it allows everybody a chance to sit in the officer's seat to direct a truck to a location. During June we also went up the Cornell Equine Park to look over the bams and buildings and to work with the facility manager in case of an incident there. The bam and horses create a unique problem if there were a f:rre at that location' This is another training we try to do at least once ayear to refresh everybody's memories. At the end of ,, r-{ELP PREVENT FIRES" June we held the first of several Advanced Life Support teaching sessions at the station. With four new paramedics from our agency alone we are working with Bangs Ambulance and other departments to bring our new Paramedics up to speed with local protocols and equipment that is unique to this area. These classes are held in our training room and are open to all area providers. There is no cost for the program and the training counts toward our requirement for Continuing Medical Education hours. We have had several requests from local summer camps and schools for summer demonstrations. A couple of camps will visit the station and take tours and we will do demonstrations for the kids. In early July we will take a couple of trucks and some firefighters to the Smith Building at BOCES for a demo. These are Special Needs Children who get extremely excited when we bring the trucks to them. At this demo we usually hook up the ladder truck to a hydrant and flow some water for the kids. This is a special demo for us and the kids. At the end of June we provided a little entertainment for the kids at Northeast Elementary School when we took the truck up and soaked down their principal. The kids met their goal for reading in June and so as a reward Karen Powers of the Reading Partnership came up with the idea of the fire department spraying him down with the ladder truck. The kids really enjoyed the site. In early June a group of 10 from the station went over to Caluga Heights Elementary School to help with the new playground build. Madeline Estill of the PTA called and asked if anybody wanted to help and I put the word out. Of the 10 who went down only me and Lindsay and David Sorenson had children in the school. I was very thankful to those who helped out. It shows that these volunteers are not only dedicated to the department but to the community as well. At this time all the trucks are running well and the station is in good shape. We are going to have the floors at the station redone in early July. We do this annually with a professional service. They come in, strip the floors and rewax with several coats. We take care of the floors at the station regularly but it really helps to have it done professionally at least once a year. All of our annual equipment testing will also start in early July with hose and ladders leading off. This is all third party testing and is required to be done annually. You may have noticed the new hydrant markers that the DPW placed around the village recently. These new markers attach to the bell of the hydrant and are much more visible and easier to work with then the old re-bar marker that we have been using for years. We thank Tim Eighmey for taking the lead on this project. This is a much better system then we had. We are lookins forward to a safe summer.
