HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Monthly Report - May 2009.PDFC AYUG,A f{ E,I GT{TS F TRE D E PARTMEI{T tr94 Fneasant Grove R.oad {thaca, NY 14850 (607) 257-2377 June 11,2009 Honorable James Giimore Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report - May, 2009 May was a very busy month with a total of 45 runs. We had 31 calis in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 12 calls in the Town of Ithaca and2 requests for mutual aid. There were 16 fire calls and 29 EMS calls. As with many other months requests for medical emergencies continues to dominate the call volume. The dedicated EMS providers of the department are ready at all times to respond to requests for help. Within a month we will have four new paramedics in the department. A11 of these providers are already members and EMS providers and have been taking the paramedic program for the past year. They will test out at the end of June. We also had several motor vehicle crashes (MVC) this month. Luckily there were no serious injuries at any of these incidents. As with every summer our training program has slowed down. With family vacations and students leaving the area for the summer attendance historically drops over June, July and August. We use this time to move members thiough the checklist process in order to move them up through the ranks. This work is important for those working on the checklist in order to help polish their skills but also serves as a training aid to the senior firefighters working with them. It allows all of us to keep our skills fresh especially with tools and techniques we do not use very often. We are asking the board's approval to allow a group of officers to attend the Firehouse Expo in Baltimore over the weekend of July 23'o to 26tn. There are six officers of the department who are planning to travel to Baltimore forthis weekend of training. We drive down on Thursday and take trainings all day on Friday and Saturday and return on Sunday. Our officers attend trainings over the weekend on the latest techniques on fire suppression tactics and training techniques. Also during this weekend our EMS officers take classes on new EMS procedures as well as EMS training topics. The EMS aspect to the Fire Expo weekend started at last years show and was very well received. All of the classes over the weekend are taught by nationally recognized instructors and our officers come home with some very valuable training. This is a training event we attend annually. Our yard sale at the end of May was once again very successful. Lt Dave Openshaw organized a very well thought out and very well put together event. This year we accepted donation only during the week prior to the sale and we were all unsure if that ,, trf E,LP P R.EVEIVT F T RE S" would be enough time. Our members reaily worked hard and put in some long hours taking in donations at the station as well as traveling around the area picking donations up at people's homes. It seemed like everybody in our community contributed something to the sale. Over the last weekend in May we opened out doors and sold pretty much everything we had taken in. It was a great event for us as well as the community. At the end of the weekend the Etna Fire Department came and took every'thing we did not sell from us for a yard sale benefit they were having the first weekend in June at their station. It worked out very well for all involved. As I said in last months report the proceeds from the yard sale this year and last year as well at the proceeds from the donation letter have all gone into the purchase of the new LP15 that we hope to take delivery of in June. At training in mid May at the burn tower E203's radiator failed. We had the truck towed to Caskey's garage in Dryden for repairs. The failure was caused by corrosion in the radiator and an RPM spike when the truck was switched from RPM to pressure mode while pumping. The radiator had to be completely replaced. This took the truck out of service for three weeks. We do have it back now and it is working perfectly. L231 is still having some issues with the paint on the officer's side of the truck. Last summer it went out to the dealers for-a new paint job due to the same problem. This spring we noticed that the paint was again bubbling at the weld site. The truck will be going back to the dealer to have the work done again" All of this paint work is covered by the warranty on the truck. The station is in good shape at this time. We did have to do some maintenance to the air conditioning units in late May. Our heating and air conditioning contractor came in and serviced all of the units and found a minor leak in one of the lines. We are working with them to get this problem corrected. They also looked over the way the boiler and heat system was piped at construction and determined that the system is not piped efficiently. They looked things over and came up with a plan to repipe the boiler room. I will speak to Brent Cross and have the contractor go over his plan with him and I hope that we can fge famborelle ryz 4s TOTALCALLSYEARToDATET tsg Total calls . 45 Fire calls - 16 Elas catts - zq Total Mutual Aid - 2 Calls in the Village - 31 Calts in the Town - 12 TMINING / MEETINGS i EVENTS: 5/3 - Company Meeting 5/5 - Fire Training - Roll in Drills 5112 - Fire Council 5/13 - EMS Training 5120 - Fire Training - Scenarios 5/30-31 - Gommunity yard Sale UPCOMtrNG EVENTS: 617 - Gompany Meeting 6/9 - Fire Gouncil 6/10 - Fire Training - Building under construction walkthrough 6117 - Fire Training 6125 - EMS Training Cayuga Heights Fire Department Fire Department:55002 Companies:All Date Range:From 05/01/2009 to 05/31/2009 Box/Zone/ Code:All District:All Situation Found:All Exclude Mutual Aids:No Exclude Exposures:No Incident Run Log ncident#Date Time Address Occupant Situation Found IYUIIIUET Attendin 1009-090156-00 O510112009 14:42 See NYS PCR #5-2545133 r;c EMS call, excluding vehicle 7 1009-090157-00 05/01/2009'16:58 See NYS PCR#5-2545134 lT-=EMS call, excluding vehicle I 1009-090158-00 05/0112009 22:07 See NYS PCR# 5-254135 G EMS call, excluding vehicle 11 1009-090159-00 0510412009 19:34 See NYS PCR# 5-2545136 t-,EMS call, excluding vehicle I f009-090160-00 0510412009 21:22 See NYS 5-2545137 rEk EMS call, excluding vehicle 8 1009-090161-00 05/05/2009 19:13 see NYS PCR #5-2545138 lGM EMS call, excluding vehicle 21 J-1009-090162-00 05/06i2009 00:57 See NYS PCR #5-2545139 EMS call, excluding vehicle G1009-090163-00 05/0712009 05:05 See NYS PCR# 5-2545140 EMS call, excluding vehicle 1 r|E EMS call, excluding vehicle1009-090164-00 05/08/2009 1'1:15 See NYS PCR #5-2545141 G1009-090165-00 05/08/2009 19:57 See NYS PCR#5-2545142 EMS call, excluding vehicle rlllrtt1009-090166-00 0510812009 21:36 sEE NYS PCR#5-2545143 EMS call, excluding vehicle 1009-090167-00 0510912009 17.04 @ Hazardous condition, other Passerby alerted CHFD to low hanging wire in 200 block of Pleasant Grove Road, 241 investigated to find downed cable wire hanging in road way.
