Re: Report of the Police Department for April2009
For the month of April there were 131 complaints reported to the police department and 3 motor vehicle
accidents investigated. There were 72 traffictickets issued and 6 parking tickets written'
For the month of April there was one felony complaint, for Grand Larceny' A resident reported noticing
numerous items of jewelry missing from her jewelry box. The resident stated that the last time she wore
any of the items was appro*imut.t! 7 months ago. A week llrter, the resident found the jewelry in another
location in the house" The case was closed as unfounded'
There were nine misdemeanors reported: four for Petit Larceny, two for Criminal Mischief' one for Scheme
to Defraud and two for Identity ih.t. On. larceny was the report of a bicycle stolen from a resident's
yard. While on patrol, the officer observed that a st'op sign and post had been removed and taken from an
intersection. The DPW was notified and a new sign anJ post were installed. A complaint was received
from a group home supervisor that a certain numbei of preicription pills were missing from the count and
had not been given to the recipient. All of these larceny reports are still under investigation" while on
patrol, the officer observed two males in a vehicle which was traveling very slowly down the road' The
vehicle then stopped, the two subjects got out and started putting fre wood into the back of the vehicle'
Both subjects admitted that the fire wood was not theirs and thet did not have permission to take it' The
owner of the firewoo6 was contacted and did not want to pursue criminal charges but did want the Campus
Judicial System and the Office of Fraterniry and Sororiry Affairs advised of the incident. This was done
and the case was closed. One criminal mischief "otpLint was the report by a resident.that one of the
windows in her overhead garage door had been broken out, possibly by a thrown rock' The second
criminal mischief was the iepo:rt of damage done to a complainant's vehicle while it was parked in a
parking lot. A resident r."port"a that he had"advertised his apartment on Craig's List in order to sublet it for
the summer. He had been iorresponding with a subject via email about renting it. The subject mailed him
a check for a larger amount and reques-ted that he wire the remainder back to her using Western Union'
The resident did so and then later wai notified by his bank that the check was fraudulent. The resident was
advised that this is a well know manner of a scheme to defraud and not to communicate anymore with the
subject as the subject was still contacting him via email and had even mailed him another check which he
did not deposit. The final misdemeanors were the reports of identity theft. A resident stated that he
received an extra charge for a service on his Verizon Uitt. tie was advised by Verizon that- someone had
..qo.rt.a the service firr unlimited long distance calling. The resident advised Verizon that he did not ask
for the extra charge was still ,orr.rp&ding with the iompany and would let this department know the
outcome. A resident reported she had found-that a large amount had been charged to her credit card' When
she inquired about it ,6" *u, advised by her bank that an unknown subject had contacted the credit card
,o.puny and changed the mailing address on her account and her email address. Merchandise had been
charsed to her card and the items mailed to an address in Texas'
There were two violations reported for the month of April: one for Disorderly Conduct and one for
Harassment. The disorderly conduct complaint was the report of a loud party and many people outside the
location making noise. The officer spoke to the subjects and the parff Lnded. rire traiassment case
involved a subject who reported that he felt threatened by some construction workers as he aftemoted to
drive by them. The offtcer responded and spoke with all parties involved and the situation was resolved.
