Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - April, 2009
We ran 40 calls in the month of April. We had 24 runs in the Village of Cayuga Heights,
14 runs in the Town of Ithaca and2 requests for mutual aid. There were 20fire callsand
20 EMS calls. On April 20th we were dispatched to a brush fire at 0416 hours. It isunusual to have a brush fire that early in the moming and we responded with 1g
firefighters to the scene of a large mulch/compost fire beside a residence. W. discovered
that the homeowner had been piling yard waste and compost along a hillside beside the
house for years. They had put some fire ash that they thought was out on the pile the
night before. They woke to the smell of smoke and called for the fire department. On
arrival at the scene we found that the fire had gotten deep into the pile of debris and into
the hedgerow beside the house bordering the nearby golf course. quici<fy deploying hand
lines and brush firefighting gear led to the rapid extinguishment oi ttris fire. The
homeowners were relieved that the fire was stopped and, amazed, that 18 volunteer
firefighters were on the scene at 0430 hours.
Trainings in April started with our Annual Mandatory OSHA training class. Over twonights we required every member of the department to attend a 5 hour OSHA
recertification training. All but two members of the department took the training at the
station over the two days it was offered. The two who missed the training were
immediately put on restriction from responding to calls as this was a mandatory Gioing.
One of the two who missed the training took it in Groton the following weekend and is
now off the restriction. We take this type of training very seriously and we are very glad
every member of the department does to. Early in the month we did a training ott Wild
land Firefighting Tactics. This was offered by Lt. Dave Openshaw and Firefighter JeffKauffinan. Lt Openshaw was a wild land firefighter while in college in Colorado and
Firefighter Kauffinan currently spends his summers away from Comell as a wild land
firefighter in California. They are both very knowledgeable and passionate about this
subject. We did training on small pumps on April 15th. We have four gas powered small
"trash" pumps at the station. We use these pumps primarily to remove water from the
basements of homes when they are flooded but they can also be used to get water from
creeks and ponds to help fight brush fires or to supply water from standing sources to
assist with structural firefighting. This was a great month of hands on training and all
,, f{ E,LP P REVE,IVT F tr RES"
were very well attended. In April the county offered the Conducting Live Fire
Evolutions Class. This class is required for any person running live fire trainings in New
york State. All of our current officers have this class and six of our current members
took the class when offered in April making 17 firefighters in the department with this
training. The two firefighters we have enrolled in the spring Firefighter 1 class are
getting ready to graduate in May. Both are doing well in the class.
As stated in last months report the fire company was looking for a project to fund with
monies received over the years from the Donation Letter. At the Company Meeting on
May 3'd it was decided to move forward with the purchase of a LP15 Cardiac Monitor'
This project will be completely funded by the monies received from the donation letter
and the Annual Yard sale. We are very excited about acquiring this new equipment and
plan to place an article thanking the residents of the district for their generosity over the
years and explaining that the fire company is putting the donated funds to good use'
We have our Annual Yard Sale coming up the last weekend in May. Lt. Dave Openshaw
is .,yard Sale Command" and has already started delegating tasks to members of the
department. This is an all hands project. Anamazing amount of work goes into planning
ani executing this event and eveiy member of the department lends a hand to make this a
successful endeavor. We have already started to get donations dropped off at the fire
station but are not looking to take large items until the second week in May'
Things at the station seem to be great at this time" We are working on cleaning up the
statio"n grounds after the winter. We are having the large trees around the station trimmed
this month and are working on getting the property line between the station and the
Carriage House Apartmentsileaned up. This area has been a problem for years. When
the orfuinal landsiaping was done the omamental bushes seemed to overgrow the area
making'it impossibie to mow. We plan on thinning some of the overgrowth out and
making it easier to get into that area with a mower.
Sincerely,
tre Chief/Fire Superintendent
