CHIEF OF POLICE
June 20, 1983
TO: Honorable Frederick G. Marcham, Mayor
Members of the Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
SUBJECT: Report of the Police Chief for May 1983
The Police Department handled 76 complaints and investigated 5 motor vehicle
accidents during the month. There were 48 traffic tickets and 16 parking tickets
issued.
There were three felony complaints, two for burglary and one for grand larceny.
There were twenty -two misdemeanor complaints, nine for issuing bad checks, six
petit larceny, three criminal mischief, two aggravated harassment, one criminal
trespass and one possession of weapons.
Two persons were arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.
As authorized by Resolution 3391 on May 16, 1983, the Mayor and the Police Chief
have interviewed and hired two additional part -time police officers. Both officers
work full -time for the Ithaca Police Department and they are David R. Harrington,
age 27, 2290 Slaterville Rd., Ithaca, and Glenn R. Sharshon, age 22, Gaslight
Village Apartments, Ithaca. The effective date of their appointments is June 1,
1983 and they are presently being trained to work for the Village Police
Department.
On June 3, 1983, I received another complaint concerning parking of vehicles
in the 100 block of Devon Road in a manner which constituted a traffic safety
hazard. As the result of this ongoing problem, I decided to designate part of
the road as a "No Parking Zone" as authorized by Local Law #2 of the Year 1982,
Section 3. I directed the Department of Public Works to erect No Parking Signs
on both sides of the road from the property lines at 105 and 106 Devon Road to
Hanshaw Road and the signs were erected that date. I would like to recommend
that the Village Board schedule a public hearing prior to the regular meeting
on August 15, 1983 to consider whether this No Parking Zone should be permanent.
My authorization is good for 120 days and will expire October 3, 1983. There
are some other possible traffic law amendments which should be considered at
the public hearing also and I will discuss them with the Board at the June 20th
meeting.
There was a total of $19,551.09 in property reported lost or stolen and $714.09
in property recovered by the Police Department.
R
The full -time officers worked 11 hours overtime and the part -time officers
worked 45 hours during the month.
Res ectfully submitted,
Harlin R. McEwen
Chief of Police
