Marcham, Mayor Members of the Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights From: Francis L. Miller, Fire Chief Re: Report of the Fire Chief for April 1983 The Cayuga Heights Fire Department had a very busy month. We responded to 10 alarms of fire during April. The alarms break down to 4 false alarms, 1 malicious false alarm, 1 odor investigation, l'car fire, 1 rescue back- up, 1 lightning strike which set off an automatic alarm system, and 1 fire in a pile of mattresses in the basement of a sorority house. The rescue backup was to set up a backup line for rescue in case the victims got away from the Varna Fire Department when they were pulled to shore from the center of Fall Creek. Some of our members responded to 4 incident calls which were 1 gas spill for a gas flush, 2 calls to pump water from basements, and 1 call to assist a private nurse carry a Village resident upstairs from the television room to a.bedroom. The Rescue Squad had T calls for the month. These calls included 1 assist a person who had fallen, 1 disoriented person, 1 difficulty breathing, 1 diabetic problem, 1 full arrest, 1 cardiac problem, and 1 person with psycological problems. We had an appointment at Saulsbury Fire Apparatus in Tully to.have the pump on the Seagrave pumper N 203. Two days before this test, we discovered the American LaFrance pumper H 201 had water in the pump transmission. We decided we would take 203 for the pump test as scheduled. When Saulsbury started the pump test, they discovered some serious problems-in the pump. I gave them permission to take the pump apart and find the problem. They found a problem with the pump main shaft. They located the parts and ordered them from New Jersey,. They gave me an estimate of 2 weeks to 18 days for getting the parts and installing them and final testing. When this happened we took the American LaFrance up and had it repaired. We went up the next evening and brought it back. I talked to Jack Rogers about the old engine the DPW had. He said we could try to get it,running if we liked. The Village crews got the truck started and some of my firemen worked on the pump to stop a lot of leaks. We now have this old truck in service as a reserve engine. The Seagrave is still at Saulsbury waiting for parts. I have not been able to get an estimate on the cost for repair yet. , ;.Respectfully submitted Francis L. Miller Fire Chief "HELP PREVENT FIRES"
