HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Engineer Dec 1981M I0 Snow has been falling in small quantities but at frequent intervals. This requires . salting and sanding quite frequently, thereby increasing the costto the Village. Snow removal policies continue as they were last year. Police Officers on duty notify Bob Tyrrell at any time night or day as to road conditions. Bob Tyrrell inspects the .`• '', roads and calls in a crew if he thinks it is necessary. Use of a mixture of sand and salt, using as little salt as possible but still keeping roads safe, continues to be our policy. Salting and sanding of intersections, hills, and bad curves is our, policy but straight sections of streets will be plowed but not salted and sanded. REMINGTON CREEK AT HIGHLAND ROAD Wing walls at the Remington. Creek culvert are under construction under Highland Road:, The virtues of rip rap versus railroad ties was again reviewed, and it is the opinion of the Engineer that railway ties would be the better of the twoat this location. It should be explained that it is`not a single wall of railroad ties but a four —foot . deep cribbing constructed of railroad ties with a considerable number of "dead men" backfilled with gravel that will give each of the wing walls a solid, permanent type. construction that will be resistant to erosion and flood damage. A small dyke or berm was left in the ditch line to the north of the culvert by the machine -that was used to clean out the creek bed. Although the height of the berm was not at an elevation to cause water to flow to the south rather than to the north at a flood stage, the berm was removed. The cleaning of the upstream creek bed was investigated and the more or less "vee" bottom of the creek now existing creates a higher velocity of the water and therefore there is less tendency .for gravel buildup than a flat, broad stream bed. In addition, the gravel that was moved out of the bottom of the creek bed is necessary along the south bank, the Norberg property, to protect against further bank erosion. 14
