Re: Report of the Fire Chief for October 1981
During the month of October business picked up for the members of the Fire Depart-
ment. We had eight fire calls for the month, broken down as follows:
October 3 A standby in Varna 16 Hours and 08 minutes
" 6 Flexalarms from BOCES and N.E.School (wet phone lines) 8 Hours
" 11 Hasbrouck Apartments (burned out motor) 1 Hour and 21 minutes
" 11 Flexalarm from BOCES (detector malfunction) 5 Hours and 04 minutes
" 15 435 Wyckoff Ave. ( hot oven) 3 Hours
" 21 128 Salem Dr. (broken radiator hose on car) 1 Hour and 16 minutes
" 28 A standby in Ithaca 2 Hours and 30 minutes
" 30 115 Ridgewood Rd. (alarm malfunction) 2..Hours and 23 minutes
A total of 39 hours and 42 minutes were spent on fire calls this month.
'he rescue calls added up to 10 with a total of 37 hours and 30-minutes spent by the
mou.bers of the squad.
2 person down calls
2 motor vehicle accidents
2 falls with injuries
3 cardiac calls
1 atheletic injury at Jesup Field
There were 3 incidents during the month at which our m ers gave up 372 hours and
30 minutes of their time to the community at large. A flexalarm malfunction cost us
25 minutes. Five of our members helped Varna at a fire with a. portable generator to
assist in lighting for a total of 5 hours and 5 minutes. The third incident started
at 10 PM on October 27 and did not end until about 4 PM on October 29. During this
time we visited 41 homes to shut off gas and /or electricity, helped to evacuate the
owners of one house, assisted Police and Public Works crews in cleaning up culverts
and roads to keep them open as well as directing traffic, investigated damp floors
and up to 6 feet of water in.basements,.used 3 of our. own trash pumps and borrowed
one from the Village DPW, and we were served meals during this period by the ladies
of the Fire Company Ladies Association.
As a direct result of the floods, the Freese Road bridge was washed out. Verna has
requested that we respond with them on any call in the Hanshaw Rd.,Sapsucker Woods
Rd.,or Freese Rd. areas because they can not cross the bridge. This adds about five
minutes to their response time to these areas, which could be critical. I told their
Chief we would be happy to help them in their,.time of need.
Respectfully submitted
