McEWEN I 836 HANSHAW ROAD . ITHACA. NEW YORK 14850 • TELEPHONE 607- 257.1011 CHIEF OF POLICE February 17, 1981 Honorable Frederick G. Marcham, Mayor Members of the Hoard of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights I hereby submit the report of the activities of the Cayuga Heights Police Department for the Year 1980. The number of complaints handled by the Department increased considerably in 1980 as compared to 1979. The total increase of 176 complaints was primarily in the area of miscellaneous complaints, although there was also a significant increase in the felony, violation and ordinance categories. The number of Driving While Intoxicated arrests continued to be fairly high, although they decreased from 23 in 1979 to 17 in 1980. The most significant increase in problems was the rise in burglaries from 11 in 1979 to 27 in 1980. Most of the burglaries, 20 to be specific, were residential, 10 of which were in the daytime, 8 of which were in the nightime and two which were unknown. $70,610 in property was stolen in burglaries and $17,633 in property was recovered from burglaries. The increase follows an increase in burglaries both statewide and nationally and is discouraging. A great amount of the officers time was devoted to crime prevention and investigation of burglaries this year in an effort to offset the rising burglary problem. Over 80 residents called upon the Police Department to make crime prevention surveys of their homes and the number of calls from citizens reporting suspicious persons increased significantly. A large increase in residential burglar alarm systems was also a result and there are now over 50 residential alarm systems in operation in the Village. We continue to call upon our residents to notify us of suspicious persons and believe that citizen involvement and cooperation is the key to main- taining a safe community to live in. The support and cooperation of the Mayor, the Board of Trustees, and other Village Officers and our residents is very much appreciated. Respectfully, Harlin R.
