Difficulty has ari.nen in planting trees in the Village right of way in between the sidewalk and paved reads in front of the Khroto and Hartnett properties on Triphnmme Road. It is now the opinion of the Village Forester and the supplier of our trees that they would not survive longer than two years if planted in this area, due to salt pollution, compactod soil, and the fact that there is a gas line directly under where the trees were-to be planted. In discussing the matter with the property owners, they are not in favor of planting the trees on their property on the inside of the sidewalk. The trees have been purchased, are well balled, and there should be no problem in storing them, covered with rrslch, for a number of weeks. It is the Engineer's suggestion that a new location for these ten trees be found and they be planted within the next month. Mr. Khroto is still interested in planting something between the sidewalk and the traveled right of way and has requested the opinion of the Village Forester as to whether some kind of bush, similar to that in front of Mr: Petrillose's property to the north, would grow and whether it would be permissible. SEWER LINES An extensive report on the capacity of sewer lines through which sewerage from the Town of Lansing flows has been completed and is available for the Board. In deter- mining the capacity of a pipe to harry sewage, not only the slope and the size of • the pipe must be considered, but also the possibility of infiltration of storm water; and, lastly, obstructions that might occur in the line due to foreign matter that could enter the system through manholes. We have had a number of cases where rocks, sticks, logs, have been removed from manholes and sewer lines. In an effort to re- duce this foreign matter in the sewer lines and prevent blockages, it is suggested that 100 or 150 pounds of scrap metal be bolted to the underside of the sewer man- hole cover. This would prevent most vandals from lifting sewer manhole covers but would permit our personnel to lift the msnaole cover with the proper tools. The bolting down of manhole covers has proven unsatisfactory in many areas because of the corrosion and seizing up of bolts used to secure the cover. I suggest that a request be made to Lansing to so treat their manhole covers in the section of line in the Village of Lansing that leads through open fields and woods to the Berkshire sewer main in the Village. We have had a number of occurrences of rocks in this line, and Mr. James Tucker reports that he has had to chase away some youngsters from fooling around sewer manhole covers adjacent to his property. SNOW REMOVAL The first occurrence of snow and ice on the Village Roads for this season was dealt with by our two operating salt spreaders. As yet, we have not had to use Village snow plows, but we do have ready and waiting three mounted snow plows to give prompt service on snow removal in the Village. VILLAGE HALL . The recommendation of the Engineer for safety is that a runner of burlap material be placed on the Village sidewalk from the front door of the Village Hall to the road, to be used in place of salt or calcium chloride or other chemicals that have been used in the past to melt ice and snow on the Sidewalk. No zoning permits have been issued since the last regular meeting of the Board.
