Report of the Police Chief for October 1975
The Police Department handled 79 complaints and investigated 11 motor
vehicle accidents. There ware 75 traffic tickets and 42 parking
tickets issued during the month.
There were 4 felony complaints, 3 for grand larceny and l for criminal
possession of a forged instrument. There were 21 misdemeanor complaints,
6 for criminal mischief, 5 petit larceny, 6 bad check, 2 criminal
trespass, 1 criminal possession of a wep.pon and 1 unauthorized use of
motor vehicle. There was a total of $8,504.49 in property reported
lost or stolen in the Village during the month and tie recovered
$8,218.98 in property.
There was 1 person arrested for grand larceny, 1 for criminal possession
of a weapon, 1 for bad check, 1 for driving while intoxicated and 2 for
public intoxication.
At the Village Bosrd melting on October 21, 1974, Resolution 2347 autho-
rized for Mayor to grant e. leave of absence to part -time Police Officer
Merton S. Wallenbeck fram J? --ruazy 1, 1975, through De ^ember 31, 1975.
Mr. Wallenbeck has been serving ar. Town Justice for the Town of Ithaca
during this tike and will terminate that position as of December 31,
1975. He has,'therefore, requested that he be reinstated as a part -
time officer effective December 312 1975, and it is the recommendation
of the Police Chief and the Public Safety Committee that the Board
approve this request. I, therefore, recommend the following resolution:
"VOTED to authorize the Mayor to reinstcte Merton J. Wallenbeck
as a part -time Police Officer effective December 31, 1975, and
to notify the Tompkins County Personnel Department of this
action."
The Police Chief met with the Pub:_ic Safety Committee on November 13,
1975, and discussed the posoibility of hiring a typist for the Police
Department under the CLrrA program at no expense to the Village. Such
a position would only be in existence until June 30, 1976, and would
allow for the Police Department to alleviate a backlog of filing and
typing which has accumulated over the past 2 or 3 years. The Public

Safety Committee recommends that the Village Board approve authorization
to apply for the funds for such a position with the understanding that
this position will not be funded by the Village beyond the CEPA funding
period and that this is a temporary position only. I, therefore, recommend
the following resolution:
"VOTED to authorize the Mayor to apply to the Tompkins County
Commissioner of Personnel for one CETA Typist position in the
Police Department at the rate of $2.50 per hour for a 35 hour
workweek through the duration of the present CETA program of
6/30/76, and further, if the funding is available, to authorize
the Mayor and Police Chief to interview and hire a person to
fill this position."
The officers worked a total of 65 hours overtime during the month.
