HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Engineer for Aug 1975VILLAGE OF CAYTrrA HEIGHTS • ReporL of the Fngincer - Month of August 1975 STRB:NTS Extensive work is about completed on Sheldon Road. Ditching, patching, and shouldn•.• work was completed before the motor paver was brought in to pave the entire road. Because of inclement weather, the entire paving job was not completed. It shouli be completed next week. East Upland Road at Triphammer Road alteration is completed except for the tion of the final paving surface. New curbs were installed, and the surface of road was raised up to 1 foot, 14 inches to give a more level area for starting ofi after stopping at the stop sign. .It is hoped this will make the intersection safer, Mr. Khroto of 1004 Triphammer Road wishes to plant or have planted trees and grass on the street right of way in between the sidewalk and paved area. There is a section along Triphammer Road that could use a dozen trees that would grow to pro- vide a noise barrier, shade, and would generally improve the appearance of the properties abutting the street. Mr. Khroto said that he would be happy to plant the trees if the Village did not want to plant them. It is the recommendation of the Engineer that the tree planting in certain areas in the Village be undertaken now that the major part of our cost of elm tree removal has been taken care of. It is his further recommendation that the Village start in this area fcr tree planting. The cost to the Village would be for the planting and purchase of the trees to • planted. The watering and maintenance of the area after planting should be the responsibility of the property owner, as it would be difficult for Village work forces to water trees and plantings at a time when it was required. If the Village Board wishes to continue to block off Lower Remington Road from vehicular traffic, the Engineer suggests that the guard posts placed 8 to 10 feet from the paved edge of the road within the road right of tray be extended to the south from the Remington Creek culvert just north of this road. Reflectors would be painted or attached to the posts. The intersection would then become a "T" intersection with Remington Road ending at North Sunset. These would be permanent posts and access to Lower Remington Road would be gained only by coming up from East Shore Drive. Large signs,in the Engineer's opinion, should be avoided as they are costly and unsightly. Residents in the area have objected to these large signs. Before this project is undertaken, the legal requirements should be investi- gated to protect the Village against possible law suit. SEWER LINES There have been indications that the section of 10 -inch sewer main in Lower Reming- ton Road carrying sewage from the Lansing area has overflowed in a period of heavy rain. The Town of Lansing is on record as agreeing to pay for the cost of replacing this 10 -inch main with a 12 -inch or adequate size main if problems in capacity were encountered. It is the recommendation of the Engineer that Lansing be notified of the present condition, and that steps be taken for the replacement of this 10 -in line with a 12 -in line. page 2 - Report of the Engineer for the month of August 1975 • SEWER PLANT The Engineer met with Teetor - Dobbins representative, Tony Wylen, and representativeP of Stewart and Bennett contractors and also Mr. Gary Gleason the plant operator to go over the work that must be completed before a final inspection is mafle. A 71.r'; was made and agreements reached as to what work was to be accomplished by the con- tractor. Upon a final inspection, a punch list will be made for all remaining itr ra that are yet outstanding after the final inspection. At present, the two tricklinC filters are both in use and growth has started on the media so there is now treat- ment of a secondary nature. The tertiary treatment system is still held up by factory representatives of the equipment in the lime slurry system. As soon ae these representatives are on the scene, this equipment can be started art. tertian treatment begun. MOWING Second mowing of road right of ways and empty lots has been completed. STREET LIGHTS The Engineer has met with the representative of the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation and has inspected installations of underground street lighting in the Ithaca area. He has also discussed the matter with Mr. Jacobs as to the type of lighting poles desired by him in his development. The New York State Electric and Gas Corporation will provide a standard pole with a standard fixture which would e cost the Village about $15 per year more than the Village now pays for standard street light fixtures, maintenance, and power. It is the recommendation of the Engineer that this type of contract be entered into with the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation and that, if the land developer wishes street lighting of a more elaborate nature, he provide for its cost and its installation. SIDEWALKS If the sidewalk on Triphammer Road between Iroquois Road and White Park Road is to be installed this Fall, the decision should be made by the Board at this meeting. BIDS ON SE PEER PIPE Action on the bids received by the Clerk for sewer pipe,as listed in her report, should be taken to provide supplies for continued sewer line repair.
