HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Fire Chief for Feb 1975VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS Report of Fire Chief - February 1975 On February 13th, at 11:55 a.m., and February 18th2 at 2:00 p.m., there were two False Alarms over the Flexalarms which sounded the horn on the Fire Station. It was found that telephone repair men working on the lines near the station had acciden tally shorted the lines causing an alarm. Nine men responded. The monitors were not alerted. On Sunday, February 23rd, at 11:20 a.m., Engine 202 and three men responded to the Village Hall. A ladder was used to check the chimney where a squirrel had entered the building and caused serious damage to the windows while attempting to escape. At 12:07 a.m., February 28th, an alarm was sounded for BOLES School where a night watchman reported a strong odor of gas. It was found a truck parked inside the building was leaking gasoline. The hazard was removed from the building. Engines 201, 203, and Car 261 responded with 12 men. Air masks and air tanks are being used more than ever in this day and age at all fires. The masks are used not only for smoke but because of the noxious gases emitted from furniture, plastics, and many other modern materials. To refill the air tanks after fires and drills, the Fire Department has a Cascade system which con- sists of three large air tanks. These are rented from National Auto Weld. I recently found we are paying $1.00 per month per tank for an annual cost of $360.00 per year plus the cost of refilling the tanks which is $10.00 per tank. I& We found that Lawless Fire Equipment Co. in Elmira has three tanks which are hew and were back ordered some time ago. They will sell these to us at their cost which is $150.00 each for a total of $450.00. Further, with our own tanks, we could refill them at Ithaca's central fire station free. This would avoid the $10.00 refill charge per tank. If new tanks were ordered today, I am told by the County Fire Co- ordinator that one would wait at least two years to have an order filled and the cost would be nearly twice that being asked by the Lawless Co. We do not have the necessary funds; but,in talking with the company, they are willing to wait for payment until our new budget goes into effect in June. I ,rould therefore respectfully ask the Board for a motion authorizing purchase of these three tanks now, with payment to be made in June 1975. I also wish to report the shower in the bunk room at the Fire Station is beyond repair. Hull Plumbing has tried several times to repair the mixer control without success. The entire shower head and mixer must be replaced, as the bunkers are unable to obtain any hot water in the shower. Estimate for replacement and labor will be between $150.00 and $200.00. Hull Plumbing is going to make the necessary repairs as soon as possible. REPORT OF FIRE INSPECTOR - February 1975 A re- inspection was made of Dewitt Jr. High School, in particular a natural gas installation newly installed by the Gas Co., to correct a dangerous condition. • A re -visit was made to Cayuga Heights School. Also, a re- inspection of 316 Highland Road, the Indelicato apartments, re an enclosure of a stairwell to meet safety standards.
