0 Report for February, 1974
•
The Department made five emergency responses during the month
of February. There was no reportable fire loss.
Further investigation of the change over of Ithaca Threads' on
our 21," hose and hydrant couplings has revealed that the costs will be
a great deal less than was anticipated. It seems that the hydrant
nipples can, in most cases, be expanded to "National Standard" threads
by use of special tools. There will be some breakage, of course, and
on those hydrants, the cost will remain about $70.00 per hydrant. On
hydrants that can be rethreaded, costs will be for labor, new hydrant
caps and painting.
The hose also can be expanded in most cases to National Standard
thread and costs there will be again for laberand new gaskets, with
possibly some new couplings to Cover breakage.
I would estimate that the costs will be less than one half our
original estimates of $10,000.00. This is taking into account the
generous offer of the Ithaca Fire Department to loan us their special
tools and equipment. I would suggest that the Village Engineer be
authorized to negotiate with the City Water Department to furnish
labor and materials for the hydrant change over.
The Fire Council will make a recommendation in the near future
about hose conversion. One thought is to hire, on a part time basis,
the men in the Ithaca Fire Department who will be converting the
hose in that denartment.
Respectfully submitted,
Ned G. Boice
Fire Chief
