HomeMy WebLinkAboutVillage Forester Annual Report 1972VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS VILLAGE FORESTER ANNUAL REPORT In addition to Dutch Elm disease, another disease (phloem necrosis) was found to be causing death in our elms. The result was a heavier loss of elms than the past two years (see table below): Elm Trees Removed 1970 1971 1972 Private property 530 483 544 Village property 125 113 121 Total 655 598 665 The initial survey was completed in early July and all trees which had not been marked at owner's request were marked. During late July the first letters were sent out asking the owners to remove trees by early September. Another letter • was sent out in late August. In January another check and survey was made to determine which property owners had not removed their trees so the last letter could be sent out in February. To date, only 14 property owners have not removed their trees. The new disease (phloem necrosis) has set back our program of elm disease control. I expect that the new disease will hit again next year. Although dis- couraging, I do feel our elm disease program remains sound. The present program is significantly reducing the spread of Dutch Elm disease through the Village. If we abandon our program, we will lose most elms within 10 years and removal would be costly. Finally, I would like to thank the Villagers for their cooperation and also thank several of my graduate students who again so ably assisted me in the extonnive Lree survey. • David Pimentel Village Forester 2/27/73
