O REPORT FOR AUGUST 1972
The department responded to four alarms during the month. Two of the
alarms were false alarms and two were mutual aid to Lansing resulting in no
fire damage in the fire protection district. The department also responded
to three incidents during the month, the major one being a flush of the
New York Telephone Company manholes in the Corners area.
Inspections made during the month were at BOCES and the Corners Community
Center complex.
In the Corners complex conditions ranged from poor to hazardous. Among some
of the hazards found were: improper wiring, no fire extinguishers, storage in
furnace rooms, flammable liquid storage in buildings and near furnaces, fire
extinguishers needing service, poor and sloppy housekeeping, exit signs not
illuminated, no exit signs, no fire doors, fire doors without closers, use of
light duty extension cords to run appliances such as air conditioners and coolers,
non vented furnace rooms, improperly installed and maintained furnace stacks,
improper incinerator operation, storage under stairwells, blocked exits.
A copy of each inspection (done on an individual business basis) was sent to
both the tenant and the landlord. The most hazardous situation which was
called to the attention of the inspector by N.Y.S. Electric and Gas on a
routine complaint of gas odor was the storage of flammable liquids and
• gasoline powered equipment in the cellar under Cosentini Shoes. This was
called to the attention of Mr. Heasley by letter on the 23rd and 29th of
August. To date no action has been taken to relieve the situation and the
possibility of an explosion of major proportion still exists.
The inspector of course can take no action other than to make recommendations
since the Village operates without Fire Codes.
