HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Engineer Aug 1972VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS REPORT OF THE ENGINEER AUGUST 1972 STREETS Ditching on the upper part of Hanshaw Road and some other streets was accomplished during the past month with the use of a Grade -all rented from the Town of Dryden. Center line striping on the roads with traffic paint was applied by the Village work force in an effort to reduce costs. After some initial problems, experience was gained and the striping is adequate. FLOOD DAMAGE The Engineer met with representatives of the State and Federal governments. An estimate was made of the damaged amount that will be reimbursed to the Village from the Federal Government in the amount of $181.34. REFUSE COLLECTION It was necessary to purchase a replacement blade for the Heil packer which we expect to keep as a spare. This should solve a long series of problems we have had with this packer. Much of the Village work force time and Village equipment has been used to remove elm wood of trees cut down on the Village right of way and also out down on private property and placed by the roadside for Village collection. When possible a chipper is rented from General Arborists to reduce the number of loads that must be hauled to the County Landfill. There are many more trees marked for removal so this work load should not decrease in the next month. 40 SEWER LINES A sewer stoppage was found in a 10" main that crosses over the large culvert under North Sunset Drive. This stoppage was corrected but indications are that with the deterioration of this culvert under the sewer line and under the road extensive repair will be necessary on the sewer line. It is anticipated that this culvert trill be replaced. It -visa badly damaged in the flood and will be partially financed with money from the Federal Government Flbod Relief. Work should begin in the month of September. It is anticipated that with the Village work force and with help from outside contractors with equipment that will be needed for the job but not owned by the Village that this work can be done. WATER A public hearing on Bolton Point as a source for water will be held on September 11th starting at 1:00 p.m. in the offices of the Town of Ithaca. TREE REMOVAL The removal of trees on the Village right of way and too large for the work force to remove has been put out to bid in the same manner as last year. Some confusion has been experienced with property owners because the men marking trees for the Village Forester have marked some with a zero that are on private property gad others with an X which are on the Village right of way. When these markings • are corrected by exact measurements by the Village work force property owners are sometimes upset. It is my suggestion that the Forester have his men mark the trees that are to be removed -vrith the same mark whether they are on the Village right of :ray or private property. The Village work force will then take measurements and establish which trees are on the Village right of way and mark them further for Village removal. Engineer's Report Page 2 S MOWING The first mowing of empty lots which were not privately mowed before June 15 have all been mowed by the Village work force and bills sent to property owners. Property owners will be charged at the rate of $9.50 an hour for the Village workmen and Village mowing machine. J. B. Rogers Village Engineer
