REPORT OF FIRE DEPARTMENT
NOVEMBER 1971
The department responded to three alarms of fire, made one assist at Lansing
Apartments and investigated smoke in the laundromat at the Corners in November.
Fire loss was limited to an estimated $400.00. ($300.00 motor vehicle and $100.00
dwelling and personal property.)
The drowning emergency at Lansing Apartments was covered by 19 men who
donated a total of 57 man hours on Thanksgiving Day to drain the pool using the
pump on Engine 3, the portable pump and were assisted by men from Lansing #5
using their portable pump. Perhaps the Public Safety Committee should review
our ordinance on swimming pools to prevent such a tragedy from occuring in the
Village.
At the last Fire Council meeting 2nd Assistant Chief Roger Morse's request
for a leave of absence was granted and the following appointments were made to
fill the officers positions created by Roger's absence. Board approval of these
appointments is requested:
Edward Collins - Second Assistant Chief (advanced from third Assistant)
Samuel Lewis - Thud Assistant Chief (advanced from third Lieut.)
Robert Day - Third Lieutenant (Bob is our resident driver)
• The fire council granted Roger Morse's request with regret as Roger has
served our department since 1959 as an officer and served as Chief for two of
these years. Roger stated that he wishes to become active again as soon as his
duties at Cornell permit.
After some delay all the components of the school alarm system have been
received and as soon as the electrical connections are made by Norton Electric
the system will be operational.
The building has been completed by the contractor and all items which were
reported as incomplete or not as specified have been completed or corrected and
the building is now satisfactory and should be accepted by the Village.
There were two inspections made in November:
11/3/71 509 Wyckoff Road - Final inspection, certificate of occupancy under
NYS Multiple Housing Law issued.
11/30/71 Cayuga Heights School - Annual inspection as required by NYS, there
were many violations discovered at the school
and the inspector is working with the principal,
Mr. Stone to correct these as soon as possible.
