The banquet was attended by 50 members and guests. April 6th was also the annual meeting of the Company. Eugene Dymek was elected Captain of the Company for the year 71 -72. This was also the effective date of new By -laws for the Fire Company and Fire Council; it is hoped that these By -laws will improve the efficiency and operation of both the Department and Company. A copy of the By -laws are on file with the Village Clerk if any of the Board members wish to read them. The Fire Council has made an attempt to solve some of the problems encountered since Lansing cancelled the fire protection contract for the Triphammer area The major problem being that despite efforts to inform the public our department still quite often receives first call for assistance from this area. We are legally not able to respond until requested by the Lansing Department. On occasion this • has resulted in bad public relations for both departments and could result in needless loss of property or life by delaying response. The council has proposed through the office of County Fire Coordinator a standing Mutual Aid Plan under which the first called department would respond, with one engine and notify the other department, if the emergency was in the other's territory. Naturally, this agreement would be operable in both directions. April was a busy month for the department and company. This totals to 17 responses and 56Z manhours in actual fire duty. • On 4/9 a standby was called when we experienced a power failure and were unable to sound our alerting sirens. Volunteers were alerted by radio using our portable generator to power the radio transmitter. The monitors at the volunteers homes are equipped with battery paks so that the monitors operate during a power failure. The power failure was short but accounted for an additional 8 manbours. The appointment of Lawrence Rabin as bunker fills the bunkroom until at least September. We have a student interested in moving in then, if Larry decides to leave us at that time. Fire Department Report 4/71 Page 2 Building Program: The Engineer and Chief will make their recommendations pertaining to the bids on the Sprinkler System at this meeting. Bids are to be opened on May 14. It is hoped that these bids will be in the neighborhood of $4000 - $5000. There is a delay in the steel for the roof supports but the contractor is still targeting a July completion. Other work is progressing as planned. Last word on the steel is the second week in May. It is suggested that bids on painting be let, by the Engineer, so that the painting contractor can start at completion of the building. These specifications for painting were also to include the needed painting of the existing building. All of the exterior and the interior of the apparatus bays are sadly in need of paint. The volunteers, resident driver and bunkers have painted the Company Room, halls, bunkroom, stairways, and lavatory in recent months. It is also suggested that the Engineer be authorized to plan with the Fire Council the layout and construction of the needed drives, drainage, parking area and landscaping that are part of the building program. If this were done soon, estimates could be presented at the June meeting for the Board's consideration. Regardless of what the rumors are the Fire Department is not going to the dogs. In keeping with the Fire Council's policy of allowing use of the building by as many groups as possible and still compatible with fire safety the annual Rabies Clinic was held at the fire station on April 22. The Forest Home Playschool toured the fire station on April 23. Four adults and • 18 children were given a tour of the facilities and a short lecture on fire safety. The April Company drill was a fire prepalnning and tour of the new BOLES complex. This again reminded all the volunteers of the added responsibility the construction of schools, shopping centers, apartment complexes, and dormitory type facilities brings upon them and the department. The Fire Council requests permission to order the following items which were budgeted for 71 -72.
