HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Report for Feb 1971A U CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT Report for February 1971 There was only one alarm of fire in February. This was in the Village and resulted in no damage. The heavy smoke and odor was caused by a mouse which had stored food particles in a dryer vent and when the dryer was operated the food particles ignited. There were 4 complaints, investigations or assists handled in February. These were a flammable liquid spill, a reported leak in the water tank at Christopher Circle, flooded cellar and a request to dispose of 30 gallons of flammable liquids. Three of these were in the Village and 1 in the town of Ithaca. One inspection was made at Cayuga Heights School after a complaint was registered by a resident. The unsafe condition reported had been corrected and it was found that the school principal has corrected most of the hazards found on the initial inspection made in November. The new hose dryer has, been received and set up in the fire hall. The insurance company sent a check for the full insured amount of the old dryer and the net cost to the Village for the new one is $320 plus freight which will be about $45. • The Pleasant Grove Nursery School toured the fire station on February 16th in the A.M. About 18 children and 4 adults were given the grand tour and a short lecture on fire safety. The two radios purchased in December are installed and operating satisfactorily. This setup enables the fire station to be able to contact our trucks at all times and also provides contact between the Chief's personal vehicle, the fire station, Mutual Aid headquarters and any fire emergency vehicle in the county. The first complete inventory made in many years was completed and is on file with the clerk. The fire company and the fire council are in the processes of rewriting their by -laws and this should result in more efficient operation and administration of each. The Tompkins County Fireman's Association was invited to use our station for their February meeting and the fire company proved to be most gracious as a host. Bids as yet have not been let on sprinklering the fire station. It is hoped to be able to secure enough information to do this in the near future. We have not as yet been able to determine the starting date for construction . nor whether or not the steel for the building has been ordered. Ned G. Boice Fire Chief
