eReport for December 1970
December alarms total 9. Five within the Village, two in the Town of
Ithaca and two in the Town of Lansing. Fire loss was limited to an
estimated $550 all within the Village, primarily smoke damage. There
were two false alarms (malfunctions in internal alarm systems), two brush
and rubbish fires, one fireplace, one overheated furnace motor, one
gasoline flush (motor vehicle accident), one defective lighting fixture
and a bomb threat. Average response was good at 16.5 men when alerting
devices were used. Total response was 81 men who expended a total of
74 man hours.
In addition to the alarms there were 8 complaints, assists or investigations
made which required about 28 man hours.
The department held 5 drills which were attended by 59 men for a total of
97 man hours.
We finally received the additional Foam Eductor which was ordered in
December 1969. Delay in the delivery was because of strikes and the fact
that our "Ithaca" threads require special processing. This unit with the
additional Foam Compound recently purchased gives us a good chance of
containing flammable liquid spills or fires until additional apparatus
and supplies can be summoned under mutual aid.
Our hose dryer was severly damaged as Engine 2 was being backed into our
existing crowded quarters. The driver's foot slipped off the clutch at a
crucial moment of manuvering and the 10 ton truck squeezed the dryer between
the truck and the wall crushing the metal cabinet of the dryer. Fortunately,
the wall was not damaged nor was the truck. The hose dryer is insured for
$640.00 and the insurance company will either pay for repairs or the full
amount whichever is less. The manufacturer is being contacted for prices
and availability of parts for the 15 year old unit. A new replacement costs
in the neighborhood of $1000.
Could I have Board approval to purchase a new one if repairs exceed the
insured value? Total cost to the Village not to exceed $360 over the
insured value. Rather rapid action on this matter is required since we
have no space to dry hose in any other manner and we have no spare hose
to speak of at this point in our Department improvement program. If in the
meantime should we have a need for dry hose or space to dry our hose I'm
quite sure that Chief Weaver would cooperate with us as much as possible.
