HomeMy WebLinkAboutEngineer's Report Feb 1971r VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS Engineer's Report February 1971 I. Village Garage Two bays of the garage have been partitioned off and insulated. This job is now complete. A six inch concrete floor has been poured in these two bays with an adequate center trench drain. This additional facility has been of great use already. The night storage of the Packer has helped with its operation which lately has seemed to have trouble with cold weather starting. It has also served to keep the salt and cinder spreader in operation which in extremely cold weather freezes and becomes inoperative. It has also served as a place for repair and maintenance of our vehicles which was most difficult in winter weather prior to the addition of this facility. At present temperate heat is being used. Two methods of heating the barn are proposed. One is called the Ko -Ray -Vac. This system is an infrared vacuum gas heating system as manufactured by Roberts Gordon Appliance Corp. The estimate from the area representative of the Gas.Appliance Specialists of Syracuse, dealers for the Roberts Gordon Appliance Corp. gave an estimated cost for materials of this system if purchased directly by the Village of $1375.00. He estimated the probable installed cost for the equipment including labor would be $2200.00. To heat the other two bays would be an additional $1200.00. The second system would be the installation of two unit heaters, gas fired, at a 125,000 BTU input. The estimated cost for these unit heaters is $125 each and the contractor's installed cost of approximately $1,000. This would include labor. Although the Ko -Ray -Vac System is more expensive for the initial installation, it is a much more efficient system and it is estimated that it will pay for itself within three or four years by saving in fuel costs. Also, the Ko- Ray -Vac system is a better heating system in that it gets the heat down to the floor of the building where it is needed most. The Ko -Ray- Vac System has been installed in the Lansing Town Garage, the Ford Garage on North Triphammer Road, the Ames Welding Fabrication Building and others_ All have had good recommendations for this heating system. I recommend the installation of the Ko- Ray -Vac Heating System. II. Elm Tree Removal The removal of wood stacked by the roadside by residents has continued when the crew has not been busy removing snow from the roads and sidewalks. The Village tree warden, Professor Pimentel, states that the removal of trees is progressing quite well. The removal on private property has posed some problems where the location of the tree cannot be exactly identified. The removal on Village property is almost complete. TII. Street Lights At present there is no street light on North Sunset Drive between Remington Road and Cayuga Heights Road. This block is some 1500 feet long. Requests • from residents along this street have been received for street lighting. There has been construction of houses in the recent past on North Sunset that have generated the need for street lighting. One resident has installed a "safe guard" light in front of his house which almost serves as a street light. It is my recommendation that at least two street lights be installed on this section of rcad. Engineer's Report Page 2 We have also received from Mr. William Kerr a request for a street light on Cayuga Heights Road in between Berkshire Road and the north Village line. He is presently building a house for his mother in this location. There is also a need for a street light on the turn off from Cayuga Heights Road onto the entrance to Route 13 before crossing the bridge. I would recommend the installation of a street light in this location, my only reservation is as to whether part of the cost could be borne by the Town of Lansing since it is on or very near the Lansing Town Line. IV. Snow Removal Snow removal equipment has received heavy use on both street plows. The salt and cinder spreader and the sidewalk plow. have been maintained in good operating condition and have always been available for emergency use. Our crew has been called out for nighttime and weekend snow removal work and have responded quickly to short time notice. Bob Tyrrell and his crew have done a good job in keeping the Village roads open and in a safe condition. J. B. Rogers Village Engineer •
