HomeMy WebLinkAboutEngineer's Report August 1971VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS REPORT OF THE EINGIHEER AUGUST 1971 • I. Streets The annual paving maintenance program has been about half completed. The patching program has been carried out on. most of the roads in the Village by shooting areas that showed wear or cracking with the hand hose and spreading stone on the emulsion. A few complaints were received from residents about the tracking of the wet emulsion. It was demonstrated at the site of the problems that the emulsion would dry in a day or two depending upon the relative humidity in the air and this seemed to satisfy the residents. Motor paving surface was put on Brooklane, Oak Hill Road, part of Upland Road, part of Cayuga Heights Road and Lenox Road. Surface treating, applying asphalt emulsion and spreading stone, was applied to a major portion of Hansbaw Road. II. Serer Plant An engineer from Teetor- Dobbins arrived in Ithaca Friday, August 6th with the plans for grading and other site work which will form part of the first stage contract that is scheduled to be put out to bid in August or September 1971. Part of this first contract is the laying of a new sewer interceptor from Remington Road to the plant. An estimated 15,000 cubic yards of excess fill will be generated by the designed grading. The question was raised by the engineers as to whether the Village had a use for this fill or whether it should be left in the contract for the contractor to dispose of it. An • advance copy of the final plans are available in the Village Office for inspection. III. Fire Station Excavation, grading and backfill with two feet of bank run gravel were carried out at the Fire House as a first step in the installation of a proper driveway for heavy trucks. Rough grading and cleanup were carried out by the Public Works force prior to the July 31st Firemen's Convention. IV. Trees All trees marked by the tree warden were inspected by the Public Works foremen. Those that could not be taken down by Village men were tagged and a list submitted to the Village Clerk. The Clerk has advertised for bids from contractors for the removal of these trees. V. Sewer Lines An 8" sewer line that runs between Midway Road and Triphammer Road was replaced for half of the distance. This line ran under a creek. It had a number of areas where there woo extensive roots growing in the sewer indicating that there were breaks or leaks in the line. The second half of the line showed no indication of breaks or stoppages so therefore was not replaced. When the sewer line was completed the area that had been disturbed on private property was graded and seeded to the satisfaction of the property • owner. A 6" sewer stub running from Cayuga Heights Road up almost to Wyckoff Road was replaced by an 8" line. This line also had roots and obstructions indicating a possible source of infiltration. This area was also graded and seeded but additional planting will be necessary later in the Fall when there is a better chance for the replaced trees to grow. J. B. Rogers, Village Engineer
