HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Report for March 1971• CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT Report for March 1971 There were only two alarms of fire in March. One in the Village resulting in minor damage to an automobile and a grass fire in the Town of Ithaca with no damage. One assist was made during the month, this was the rescue of a cat, the cat was ruffled but unharmed after a 36 hour stay in the top of a large elm tree. The building program is progressing as reported by the Engineer. Mr. Tyrrell and crew have at this point transplanted and salvaged most, if not all, of the greenery and the area is now ready for the contractor. During the blizzard of March 4 and March 5 the fire station was manned from 7 :00 A.M. on the 4th to 8:00 A.M. on the 5th by a crew of at least 10 volunteers at all times. This assured the residents of fire protection at all times when the roads were blocked and the volunteers contributed 262 manhours during this period. A total of 53 meals were prepared and served to these men at a cost of $64.17. One of the Village plows was equipped with our pocket radio monitor and this further insured that we could respond to any alarm received behind a plow to clear the blocked roads. (The crew on the plows should be commended for the excellent job they did under the most difficult conditions.) There were no alarms during this period but we did assist the Village Police on two occasions • and a stranded motorist was assisted. Our 4 -wheel drive emergency truck proved invaluable in transporting volunteers to the fire station for duty and in per- mitting us to keep a constant check on high hazard areas and road conditions. A fire protection engineer is drawing up the plans and specifications to sprinkler the fire station (at no charge to the Village) and we should very soon be able to let bids for this item. Approval is requested to order 5 Plectron Monitors and a Page Boy Pocket Monitor now, for delivery in June or July and to be paid for out of next year's budget. This item has been approved in the '71 -72 budget and since delivery takes several months we request permission to order now so that we may put these items in the hands of the volunteers at the earliest possible date. Total cost not to exceed the budgeted amount of $1,100. 17ie State of New York Department of Environmental Conservation has overridden the decision of the Tompkins County Health Department and your fire chief and has issued two permits for burning in our fire protection area. Since it was our stated policy to issue a permit to.burn only if a permit was received from the Health Department first, there was no choice but to issue the fire permits requested. Ned G.
