HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Report 6/4/1970S FIRE DEPARTMENT VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS 194 Pleasant Grove Road Ithaca, New York June 4, 1970 Hon. Frederick G. Marcham, Mayor Members of the Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Gentlemen: Attached please find the report of Fire Department operations for May 1970. Fire fighting was at a low during the month of May with only four calls of a minor nature. Drilling and training of members was pursued at an increased tempo taking advantage of the warmer weather conditions. Alarm response was down somewhat but this was because all alarms were minor and the alerting systems sounded only once for each alarm. The file cabinet, blind and shelving was received and is now in use greatly improving the temporary office in the rear of the equipment room. The resident drivers have with the aid of volunteers been flushing some of the hydrants in the area. On several occasions large chunks of debris have been flushed out in the process. This is an indication that the system is not getting proper attention from the agency responsible for this. Perhaps a reminder from the Village • Engineer is in order. The Fire Council also requested last October annual reports on hydrants in the Village. While it is fresh in WY mind, I would like to comment on the excellent coopera- tion I have received from Helen and Rose in the Village Office. Since my typing leaves much to be desired they have been most gracious in typing reports, duplicating needed forms and so forth. At the request of the Mayor the Fire Council set up priorities for the Fire Department development. The Council feels that the order of importance is: 1. Building program 2. Purchase of a ladder truck 3. Improvement of water supply 4. Adoption of building and fire prevention codes Mayor Marcham met with the Fire Council on May 279 1970 and a representative from Stran Steel was present. The estimate for a steel building not to include interior improvement such as radio room and office are: Building construction $33,437.00 Plumbing, wiring, heat 8 00000 $41,'437!00 •I contacted a local contractor for an estimate on construction using similar materials as are now in our building. This estimate including the interior work '.ias again around $40,000.00 as Mr. Ripley has previously estimated. After considerable discussion the Fire Council appears to favor construction similar to what is now existing rather than a steel building. -2- At this meeting the Mayor stated he would contact the Village Engineer about .making sketches and elevations for the new building using existing type construction. Hopefully, he will have these ready for discussion at the June Board meeting. A meeting with Chief Weaver of the Ithaca Fire Department proved most profitable last month. Chief Weaver has tentatively agreed to sell to the Village his used 1944 Alfco 85' ladder truck for $1,000 when his new ladder is delivered early next year. This truck is in apparent good condition and carries 219' of ground ladders in addition to the 85' steel aerial. If the N.Y.F.P.R.O. will accept this piece of equipment as meeting our requirements for ladders the purchase of this used truck represents a considerable reduction in expected costs to cover our needs for a ladder truck. However, we must have our building completed so we can house it. The Fire Council requested me to ask the Village Board to approve purchase of the existing air conditioner from resident Vorhis for $250.00. This was purchased by Vorhis at a cost of $375.00 about 3 years ago and its projected use is an additional 5 to 7 years. Approval is also requested for the purchase of a Portable Automatic Water Powered Hose Wash -n- Winder for $65o.0o. Respectfully submitted, • Ned G: Boice Fire Chief J -3- Average response per alarm - 10 men Complaints Monthly Report Cayuga Heights Fire Department 5/8 May 1970 5/12 Report of Alarms: Pleasant Grove Rd.
