REPORT OF THE ENGINEER
JUNE 1970
REFUSE COLLECTION
Survey of the trash collection routes which now includes the collection of garden
refuse have been under way for the last three or four weeks and it is necessary
to change the routes so each day the full route may be completed. It will be
necessary for trash collection crew then to be busy five days a week. They will
no longer be available for other odd jobs on the streets and parks as they have
been in the past. This change in routes has been made necessary by the ever
increasing amount of household trash as well as garden refuse put by the curb by
residents in the Village.
Further difficulties are anticipated as soon as it is necessary for the Village to
use a disposal site other than the city disposal site.
r• is
A new air compressor has arrived and except for minor damage to a tail light in
transit it is in good operating condition and will be most useful in our street,
sewer lines and other operations.
The Public Works Department plans to purchase a welder within the next month with
funds approved in this year's budget. The unit will be a gasoline driven AC welder
with a power plant suitable for thawing culvert pipes if necessary. This will save
us the expense of hiring welders to come in the Village Garage and in the field
whenever we have a welding job.
SEWER LINES
It is proposed to replace sewer lines where we have had trouble with blockages
from roots which is an indication of sewer line leakage. The first two for this
season will be the line on Hanshaw Road east of Pleasant Grove Road. A section
of this line was replaced two years ago. It is planned to extend the new sewer
line further to the east to the Town of Ithaca line. The other section of sewer
line to be replaced is a sewer right of way across the Roy H. Park property which
is an extension of the line that runs in Sunset Drive. It is our intention to hire
the Finger Lakes Construction Company to work in conjunction with the Village forces
for the installation of these lines.
VILLAGE HALL
With the newly acquired air compressor the pavement of the Village Green can now
be cut and the installation of a drainage pipe to take downspouts from the Village
Hall can be installed.
The completion of this, the rear yard and front yard of the Village Hall can be
completed. At the last Board meeting concern was expressed for the large tree in
front of the Village Hall. It is must be pointed out at this time that if
extensive paving for a sidewalk in front of the Village Hall is installed which
would cover more of the root system of this tree, the life of the tree could be
• endangered. If paving is desired and all precautions are desired to save the tree
the paving should be done with flagstones laid on a gravel base rather than
poured concrete or any other imperious material.

The Engineer has had discussions with the Baldwinsville Steel Building Co. of
Baldwinsville, New York on catalogs of standard buildings was in the $203000
range. They have constructed one of their buildings for the Plainville, New York
Fire Company and were in the process of bidding on a similar building for either
the Baldwinsville or Fayetteville Fire Company. Sketches of how their buildings
could be adapted to our fire company's needs and building will be available at
the next meeting.
STREETS
Numerous requests have been received for the paving of Wyckoff Road. This will be
one of the first roads the Village will pave this year. As you will recall, we
received this road from the County in relatively poor condition. It was then
necessary to install new sewer mains the length of the road and paving was delayed
for this reason. It will be now necessary to complete the construction of proper
drainage systems along the side of the road and then do a proper paving job. A bid
was received from the Dyer -Fitts Corp. of $22,000 to provide the material and pave
this road. It is the opinion of the Engineer that this is too high a figure and
other ways of paving Wyckoff Road must be found.
For hauling stone to be stock piled for our paving, it will be necessary as in the
past to hire the trucking done by a contract basis. Larger trucks than those owned
• by the Village will make it a more efficient operation and it will not tie up the
Village work force when there are so many other jobs they must perform.
