Report for November 1970
November shows a total of four alarms with no fire loss in the Village
or protection districts. The alarm on November 7 was a mutual aid call to
Lansing. 130 man hours were spent in either assisting Lansing or standing
by at our station while one engine was at the scene in Lansing.
Investigations and assists resulted in one cat rescued from a tree,
one flammable liquid spill flushed out of a garage and a flooded cellar
pumped out at 206 Winthrop Drive.
Average response to alarms was 27 men.
The 3 inch hose ordered in June was received and meets bid specifications.
This hose should prove to be a valuable asset in areas where we have poor
hydrants and hydrants are widely spaced. It is interesting to note that
Chief Weaver of the Ithaca Fire Department is now considering the purchase
of 3 inch hose for his department. Our department is one of the first in
this area to use 3 inch hose for supply lines. It is also of interest that
despite the fact that our department was subjected to some good natured
ridicule because we ordered Engine I with an automatic transmission that
the Rochester Fire Department is now ordering all their apparatus with
automatics.
• The new training program seems to be working out nicely. 76 men
spent 154 man hours in training in November.
The annual school inspections have been completed on the Cayuga
Heights and Northeast Elementary Schools. There was a problem in getting
the hydrant reports for the hydrants protecting these schools. This was
reported to Trustee Nelson and Town of Ithaca Supervisor Schwan. The
situation on hydrants should be resolved since the best of equipment and
the best trained men cannot fight fire unless they are assured of an
adequate water supply.
