HomeMy WebLinkAboutEngineer's Report Dec 1970VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS REPORT OF THE ENGINEER December 1970 • I. Manpower December 4th was the last day of work for the Village of W. Rickey Truax. He resigned to join the Armed Forces. Mr. Edwin Quick was put on permanent employment from a temporary summer job with the Village to take Rick's place. Mr. Paul Gardner was on sick leave during the week of December 7th. He was scheduled for a second hernia operation as a compensation case but the operation had to be postponed because he developed tonsillitis. The operation is rescheduled for this week and his doctor informs us that he will not be able to return to work for 8 to 10 weeks. We are presently searching for a temporary replacement for Mr. Gardner. Even if we had not lost the services of Mr. Gardner and Mr. Truax during the recent past we would still be behind in the work which the Board wishes to accomplish for the residents. It it my opinion that we are low on man- power and that if we are to do regular scheduled jobs and follow through on services that the Board wishes to provide the Village residents,at least two additional men should be added to the public works force. An additional man was requested by the Engineer during budget discussions last year. This request was turned down as you will recall in the hopes that the new public works foreman would be able to accomplish more work with the men with greater efficiency. It is felt that the public works • foreman has been effective, he has done a good job and there has been greater efficiency in the work crew, but there are still a great many jobs that are left undone because there is simply not enough time to accomplish them. II. Snow Removal To remove snow over the weekend of December 12 and 13 both snowplows and the Village sidewalk plow were in operation. Also the Village salt spreading truck was in operation. III. Cayuga Heights Road Culvert The replacement of the culvert near 106 Cayuga Heights Road has been completed enough to allow traffic over the.road. Concrete headwall was poured on the upstream side to prevent water from flowing under the culvert. Additional backfill and finish grading will be necessary on both the upper and lower side of the culvert as soon as time and weather permits. Removal of a large maple tree that provides a traffic hazard near the culvert on the curve will be removed in cooperation with the New York State Electric and Gas Company. -W. Sewage Treatment Plant Some large stones that came through the sewage line to the grit chamber • caused a breakdown in that piece of apparatus requiring its shutdown and digging out the accumulation of stone and gravel. A replacement sleeve and cylinder are on order for a sludge pump which has been badly worn. The replacement parts and installation will run $800 to $900. Engineer's Report Page 2 V. Leaf and Elm Wood Removal The entire work force worked for the past two and one -half weeks on leaf and dead elm wood removal. Although this large amount of time has already been put in this service there is still some to be done. J. B. Rogers Village Engineer • •
