VILLAGE OF CAYUGA HEIGHTS
194 Pleasant Grove Road
Ithaca, New York
August 7, 1970
Hon. Frederick G. Marcham, Mayor
Members of the Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Gentlemen:
Attached please find the report -of Fire Department operations for July 1970.
We responded to 10 alarms in July. The most serious of which was at the Sheraton
Inn where damage amounted to over $35,000. This large loss is directly attributable
to Lansings lack of a Building Code, Fire Prevention Code and the proper inspection
program that these codes insure. The extensive spread of the fire was caused by
improper installation of the range duct and improper cleaning and maintenance of
the duct. We have no such codes in the Village.
At one alarm on the Cornell Planatations where workmen left piles of brush and
tree limbs burning unattended and failed to inform anyone, Fireman Ted Szymanski
suffered an injury when he fell into a ditch while advancing a hose line. At last
report his cracked and separated ribs have healed and he is back on duty as a
volunteer. An apology from Cornell was given.
You will note on the report that average response is still good on all alarms
• where the monitors and sirens are sounded.
In spite of the fact I did not intend to set records on the number of alarms, at
the end of July we had responded to 48 alarms and 18 complaints, investigations
and assists since January 1, 1970. Many of the complaints, investigations and
assists would have been classified as alarms under the old system of reports.
The calendar year of 1969 shows 53 alarms.
The report also shows the close cooperation between the Fire, Police, Sewer and
Public Works departments.
The July 21 drill was held at the Ithaca Fire Training Center, again, with the
kind cooperation of Chief Weaver.
Engines 2 and 3 were given their annual pump tests in early July. Neither engine
was in good enough condition to pass the test. Repairs are being made and they
will be retested in August after repairs are completed. These repairs will amount
to over $300.00. The major items being a tune up and carburetor overhaul on E 2
and a new primer on E 3.
At this point there is no report from Tallman and Thomas on the plans for the
addition to the Fire Station but I have attempted to contact Fred Thomas on
several occasions and he is aware that we expect plans for the August board
meeting. The Davis -Ulmer Sprinkler Co., Inc. was contacted by E. Dymek. (They
do most of Cornell's work.) Their estimate to sprinkler the new and existing
• apparatus space is $3600 to $4000 if the village does the needed excavation to
lay the new 6 inch supply line. The original estimate by Tallman and Thomas was
$5200 with a 4 inch supply.
The recheck of Petrillose Laundromat indicates a willingness to correct the hazards.
Substantial progress has been made in correction of the hazards discovered there.
-2-
• The following items have been received and are satisfactory:
Page Boy Monitor
6 Alerting Monitors
6 pair boots
2 12 inch nozzles (3 were approved but the supplier had sold one
of the 3 available at the special price of $40.00)
Several reference books from the NFPA
4 hand lights and brackets
A spare air tank for our MSA demand masks was purchased for $72.50. This was
done without prior approval of the Board because we had no spares and the tank on
this mask had been used in training and could not be refilled without being static
tested. This takes from 4 to 6 weeks since it is not done in Ithaca. Each tank
has to be tested every 5 years. This will give us a spare to use as the tanks
come due for testing. We will in the near future need a spare for our Scott masks
for the same reason.
Respectfully submitted,
Ned G. Boice
