HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Fire Department for Oct 2004CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT 194 Pleasant Grove Road Ithaca, NY 14850 (607) 257 -2377 November 7, 2004 Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report — October, 2004 Te month of October was not quite as busy as September but we still ran a total of 43 incidents for the month. The fire department responded to 28 calls in the village, 12 calls in the Town of Ithaca and went mutual aid 3 times. In the past two months the department has responded to 102 alarms bringing the total for the year to date to 372 calls. We 22 EMS calls, 18 fire calls and as stated before 3 mutual aid alarms. We were call to Lansing twice and to Ithaca once. One of the alarms to Lansing was for a working car fire in the parking lot of the Triphammer Mall. Engine 203 responded to the call and was the first engine on the scene. LT Bruce Derrick led to attack team and in very short order had the fire suppressed. The Lansing Fire Chief on scene was very grateful for our rapid response and relations with the Lansing Fire Department remain strong. The recruits continue to train as a unit. By the time of the November board meeting the recruit class will have completed its final in- house training session and most of the class will be well on the way to meeting the state training requirements. The training officers for the department, LT Lauren Putnam and LT Andrew Magenhiem, continue to put together well planned and executed trainings. We as a department have visited the training tower for live fire training at least once a month for the past several months. These live fire evolutions are extremely valuable to our members to keep our skills honed in the event of a structure fire. We practice suppression, search techniques and emergency procedures at all live fire trainings. Upcoming trainings include car fire training with the Lansing Fire Department, and training in Danby to learn about emergency responses involving the new electric cars that are on the road these days. Public relations continue to take up a great deal of our time at the station. We had our annual Open House which was very well attended by local agencies and the public. The SWAT Team and the helicopter from Mercy Flight seemed to be the focus of much of the attention by the public. We had demonstrations on stove fires and use of fire extinguishers as well as a vehicle extrication demonstration put on by the members of the "HELP PREVENT FIRES" department. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Firefighter Lindsay Russell did an outstanding job putting the Open House together this year. As well as the open house the station was visited last month by the Cayuga Height Elementary School's first grade for a lecture on fire prevention. These young folks marched from the school to the fire station and spent the morning with us learning about fire prevention and then taking a walk around the fire station. Many of these first graders said that when they got older they wanted to live at the fire station as bunkers so as you can see the recruitment program is doing well. Local Cub Scout Troop 5 came to the station on November 6`s to work on their merit badge program. The scouts were taught fracture management, bleeding control and how to properly use fire extinguishers by firefighters Ryan Urbanowitz and Danny Wnek who are Eagle Scouts. The scouts paid very close attention to these young men and seemed impressed. Again we are looking to the future. The station looks great these days. Les Goehner and his crew continue to paint the station. One room at a time the job steadily gets done. The station beautification project is in full swing. We purchased a painting done by Walter Buble, a local artist who happens to be one of our top responding firefighters. The painting is called "Mutual Aid" and depicts Engine 203 side by side with and engine from the Ithaca Fire Department. The painting is amazing. We had some tiles in the main hallway sustain some damage when we had a boiler leak last summer so we are having those replaced in late November. The trucks are all in great working order at this time. The bunker rooms are all full at this time and all the Bunkers are performing above and beyond the call of duty at this time. We have started to push some of the newer members hard to start taking leadership classes and assume more responsibility around the department. We looked forward one year and realized that with school and work obligations we will potentially be losing ore assistant chief and three lieutenants next year. We decided to start looking ahead for'iefighters to fill these spots rather then wait till the last minute and figure out who would pick up the leadership roles in the department. We have decided against a spring '05 Recruit Class to concentrate on current member development. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this department over the past year and especially the dedication and motivation displayed by the members of the past two months. Sincerely, George Tamborelle Fire Chieffire Superintendent EMERGENCY CALLS: TOTAL CALLS YEAR TO DATE: 372 Total Calls — 43 Fire Calls — 22 EMS Calls - 18 Total Mutual Aid — 3 Lansing — 2 Ithaca— 1 Calls in the Village — 28 Calls in the Town — 12 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 10/13 — Fire Training — Road Rally 10/22 — Cayuga Heights Elementary at the Fire Station 10123 — Recruit Class 3 — Burn Tower 10124 — Open House 10128 — EMS Training 11/2 — Fire Training 11/7 — Company Meeting 11/9 — Fire Training — Car tires with Lansing FD 11113 — Recruit Training Class 4 UPCOMING EVENTS: 11 -17 — EMS Training — Ambulance Operations with Bangs 11/22 — Electric Car training in Danby 12/1— Fire Training — Burn Tower with Lansing 12/5 — Company Meeting 12/7 — Fire Training 12/9 — Fire Council APPARATUS: All trucks are working well.
