Re: Report of the Police Department for September 2004
For the month of September there were a total of 108 complaints reported to the police department and 6
motor vehicle accidents investigated. There were a total of 221 traffic tickets issued and 14 parking tickets
written.
During September there were two felony complaints, both for Grand Larceny. A resident reported that his
time trial bicycle bad been taken from an unlocked shed. A resident of Kendal reported that when she
received her bank statement she found that someone had written a check on her account for a large sum of
money. She had not known that she was missing one of her checks. The statement also indicated that there
bad been a money transfer from her saving to her checking account which she had not authorized. The case
is still under investigation. There were ten misdemeanors reported: six for Petit Larceny and four for
Criminal Mischief. Two of the petit larcenies occurred when customers pumped gasoline into their
vehicles and left without paying. Both customers were contacted and returned to pay. A complainant
reported that his wallet containing ID and cash was taken from the Jessup Field area. A DPW employee
reported a number of traffic cones were taken during the night from the Wyckoff Rd area. A resident
reported the theft of his yard light. A business owner reported the theft of money from his business by one
of his employees. The owner stated that he did fire the employee and did not want to pursue any charges
but wanted a case on file at the police department. One of the criminal mischief cases was reported when a
homeowner found that someone had driven on his lawn creating large ruts. It was apparent that a vehicle
had backed into his driveway and gotten off into the yard getting stuck. A resident stated that one of her
wooden lawn ornaments had been broken and others thrown around the yard sometime during the
overnight. A resident reported that the orange metal flag indicating a fire hydrant had been removed and
then used to break the reflectors at the end of his driveway. The final criminal mischief case reported
involved eggs thrown on the driveway, damage to a rose bush and a soccer net being cut: There were six
violations reported for the month of September: five for Disorderly Conducts and one for Harassment.
Three of the disorderly conducts were complaints of loud music or of people talking. All persons
responsible were notified of the complaints and there were no further problems. A DPW employee
notified this department that an irate subject had been arguing with the employees at a work site, became
very agitated and walked away. The subject was located by the officer and it was found that the subject
had an outstanding warrant from Cayuga County. The subject was turned over to the Cayuga County
Sheriff Department. The final disorderly conduct case was the report of subjects arguing while in the
roadway. Upon arrival, the subjects had walked into the city where the situation had escalated with one
subject striking another. All subject involved were intoxicated. The board of Fraternity and Sorority
Affairs was notified of this incident. The harassment complaint involved a resident reporting a flyer was
put in her mailbox which she believed was in response to her anti -Bush political sign in her yard. There
were no Village Ordinance complaints for the month of September. There were nine Vehicle and Traffic
complaints: six for miscellaneous complaints and three for Driving While Intoxicated. Two of the subjects
arrested for DWI were 26 year old males and the third was an 18 year old male. There were eighty-one
miscellaneous complaints handled by this department for the month of September.
During the month of September, CHPD participated in the Comers Community Day held on Saturday,
September 25'h. Office Lanning began teaching the fall classes of DARE, 2 classes at the Cayuga Heights
School and 1 class at the Northeast School. Sgt. Boyce and Officer Steinmetz qualified the two new part-
time officers with the handgun and gave training in Article 35.
The full time officers worked 135.5 hours of overtime and the part-time officers worked 191 hours. There
was a total of $17,315 reported lost or stolen and $32 in property recovered for the month of September.
