CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT
194 Pleasant Grove Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
(607) 257 -2377
Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report — May, 2004
May was a very exciting month for the fire department. We responded to 32 alarms for
the month of May. We were steady through the whole month. We ran 12 calls in the
Town of Ithaca and 16 calls in the village. We had four mutual aid responses last month.
We did two responses to Ithaca, once to Lansing for a fire at Borg Warner and we were
requested to Etna once to provide a FAST Team. This was our first request to the Town
of Dryden for FAST Team support.
The contract for Ladder 231 was signed last month. E -One was awarded the bid for the
new truck. The current ladder truck was purchased by Brinlee Mountain Fire Truck Sales
in Alabama and they picked to truck up on June P. We are currently without a ladder
truck at the fire station but we have assurances from the Ithaca and Lansing Fire
Departments for immediate mutual aid if there is a need. We look forward to a short
build time for the new truck and hope to take- delivery in the January/February 2005 time
period.
Our training program continues to produce visible results. Several members of
neighboring departments commented on how our members performed at the Borg Warner
incident. Our members responded immediately when requested and when they arrived
were ready to assume duties as soon as they were assigned. All the firefighters got off
the truck fully geared up and reported to a staging area, got assignments, carried out
assignments and returned to staging when their tasks were completed. I received many
positive comments on how well trained our members are.
On May 20'x' John Galligan of NYCOM came to the fire station to give a three hour
lecture on Volunteer Fire Departments. It was very well attended by both Village of
Cayuga Heights Trustees and Fire Department officers and members as well as by many
firefighters and elected officials from all over Central New York. The lecture was very
informative and after the lecture we gave tours of our fire station. All who attended were
very impressed with our operation. Thanks go out to Norma Manning and Assistant
Chief Steve Phillips for putting this program together.
"HELP PREVENT FIRES"
Our spring recruit class completed their in house training in May and are all close to
meeting our requirements for state trainings. We are again very pleased with the new
firefighters from this class. We are already receiving calls for people interested in
becoming members and have set the dates for the fall '04 recruit class. Assistant Chief
Marshall Stocker continues to lead this effort very well.
At this time all of the bunker rooms are filled. Our latest bunker has moved into the fire
station and signed to bunker contract and is performing well. We forecast two room
vacancies in late August or early September when two current bunkers leave for college.
We now have a waiting list of qualified members who would like to move into the
station. This continues to be a very progressive program.
Our former Chief Jon Pique has graduated from the FDNY fire academy and is now
assigned to Engine 53 in Spanish Harlem. He is having a good time and is now doing his
one year as a "Proby". He is very excited and from all reports doing very well.
Sincerely,
Geofge Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
