CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT
194 Pleasant Grove Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
(607) 257 -2377
Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report — April, 2004
We picked up the pace again in April. The members of the Cayuga Heights Fire
Department responded to 36 alarms for the month of April. We were steady through the
whole month. We ran 15 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 17 calls in the village. We had
four mutual aid responses last month, all to Lansing. Our most exciting call of the month
was on the April 21". We were called for a car off the road and down an embankment on
Route 13. Arriving units found the car in a small ravine off the side of Rt. 13. Working
quickly, efficiently and safely we managed to extricate the woman from her vehicle
successfully and move her up the hillside to a waiting ambulance.
At the fire company meeting on May 2 "d the company voted to appoint Firefighter
Andrew Magenheim to the vacant 284 position. Andrew has been a firefighter for six
years. He started with the Cayuga Heights Fire Department last year. He came to us
with four years of experience with the Franklin Lakes New Jersey Fire Department. He
is an excellent firefighter and has been integral in our training program recently. Andrew
is a junior at Cornell University and will be with us for at least the next year. His resume
is attached to this report and with the approval of the trustees will assume the duties of
284.
The Ladder 231 project is awaiting the decision of the Village Board of Trustees. At the
Town of Ithaca Board meeting on May I Oh the board members approved the purchase of
a new ladder truck at their level. We will be looking for a decision from the trustees at
the May 17c' Village Board meeting on the purchase of the new ladder truck. The lowest
responsible bidder is E -One, Inc.. E -One offered the best trade in price for the current
truck as well as meeting the specifications we set forth when we put the truck out to bid.
The Ithaca Garden Club dedicated the fire station garden in a very nice ceremony on
April 13'h. Last month we purchased a new Automated Electronic Defibrillator for the
fire department. The new AED give our EMS providers the capability to deliver
lifesaving defibrillation to pediatric patients if needed. We also took possession of a
new Milwaukee cordless Sawz -all. The brother in law of Scott Martling, one of our
members, works for Milwaukee and got them to donate the tool to the fire department.
"HELP PREVENT FIRES"
This tool will allow us more flexibility in rescue situations. We are very pleased to have
this new tool in our inventory. This donation was worth approximately $500.00.
The vacant bunker room will be filled by Firefighter Jason Gleghorn starting in June.
Jason is one of our newer members. He joined the department in January and in that time
has completed his recruit training and the checklists for exterior firefighter status, he is
enrolled in the Firefighter 1 class that ends in mid June, he has taken the ESIP course and
will start driver training shortly, he is enrolled in the Basic EMT class starting this
summer and will take the pump operators course in June. We look forward to having
Jason as a bunker. As well as having Jason as a bunker several of our members who will
be in and out of town for the summer have expressed interest in our overnight rooms for
short term stays. This will give us a couple extra responders in the station for the summer.
We are very glad that this will be happening due to the fact that historically through the
summer, with vacations, we have fewer members in town.
Sincerely,
GeIgeTamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent

2 maintenance people stopped by CHFD to ask if someone could check out an odor and smoke in TC Trust Company. 281 called dispatch to
try and get a Lansing chief to check it out. While on the phone 281 was notified that there was some smoke as well. Al this time 281 asked for
a full response.
Dispatch asked if the address was 2230 N Trip - maintenance people confirmed this.
C14FD was toned out - requested lansing as well since we believed it was their district.
202 and 231 on scene with 263 - checked entire building and roof- nothing found - units returned in service
Talked to one Lansing FF on scene and explained situation to him. He said he would pass on to 1161 what happened. 263 said he would talk to
261 and fire control as well.
While getting times, talked to fire control and they stated they have a TC Trust Company listed at 2230 and one at 2251 N. Triphammer.
Since the cleaning people confirmed address, thought 2230 was the correct address• but the call was at 2251 and in Lansing. There is a limited
service TC branch in Kendall according to TC websile.
