Andrew Magenheim
I would like to submit my name for consideration for the position of lieutenant in the
upcoming election. Prior to joining the department in May of 2003, I was a firefighter for
over five years in New Jersey. While volunteering there, I completed Firefighter I
(national equivalent to basic, intermediate, advanced), Incident Command Structure, Haz-
Mat Awareness, Flashover, and numerous extrication classes. I also completed ladder
operations at the Fire College weekend in Norwich, New York. While there, I was
instructed in various ventilation, entry and search procedures by some of the most
distinguished officers in the New York City Fire Department. Furthermore, I spent last
semester working for FM Global, the world leader in fire engineering technology. I spent
that semester doing a combination of live -bum fire tests, inspecting industrial facilities,
and conducting research on sprinkler effectiveness. The knowledge of fire behavior that I
gained combined with the fire case studies I have reviewed has provided me with a great
deal of information that will help in conducting drills and improving the overall safety of
members.
If you ask anyone in the department who knows me, they will tell you just how
passionate I am about firefighting. Firefighting has been an integral part of my life since
I turned 16 years old, and I plan to continue my career in the fire department for the rest
of my life. I am constantly trying to learn more tricks of the trade and I am always
enthusiastic to pass this knowledge on to my fellow firefighters. Whether it is at a formal
drill or simply sitting around the ready room, I will always try to answer questions to the
best of my knowledge, and if I do not know the answer, I will seek it out. I would love to
have the opportunity to run more drills in the future as a lieutenant. I have tried to be
extremely dedicated to the fire department, and if I am elected to lieutenant, this will be
my top priority. I pride myself in my ability to calmly and effectively handle any
situation encountered on the fireground. When I am playing a commanding role at an
incident, regardless of if I am in charge of a hose team or incident commander, my
decisions and orders follow an age -old firefighting proverb, "Protect the Brothers, and
Everyone Goes Home." Improving firefighter safety and closing up any holes in our
accountability system would one of my major areas of focus. I ran a drill in August on
firefighter accountability and Mayday procedures and plan on running several more
focusing on these crucial aspects of fireground operations as well as other interesting and
informative fire- related drills. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Andrew Magenheim
