From Report of the Police Department for March 2004
For the month of March there were a total of 91 complaints reported to the police department and 4 motor
vehicle accidents investigated. There were a total of 76 traffic tickets issued and 3 parking tickets written.
During March there were no felony complaints. There were five misdemeanors reported: two for Issuing a
Bad Check, two for Petit Larceny and one for the Unlawful Disposal of Firearm. Both bad check cases
were closed with the restitution paid in full. Restitution was also received for a pending bad check case
from February. Both petit larceny reports were complaints that customers pumped gasoline into their
vehicles and then left without paying. In both incidents, the customer was contacted and returned. to pay.
An employee of the Dept of Public Works turned into the police department a shotgun and shells that were
found while collecting bulky trash. The owner of the items was contacted concerning the illegal disposing
of firearms. The owner stated that he has been cleaning out items as he is getting ready to sell the house.
The box containing the frcarm had been placed in the pile of trash in error. There were two violation
complaints for the month of March: one for Disorderly Conduct and one for Unlawful Possession of
Fireworks. The disorderly conduct report was a complaint of subjects causing a disturbance by being loud
and noisy. The subjects were located while walking to their vehicle parked in community comers parking
lot. They had been visiting a friend in the area and had not realized that they were talking so loud. This
department received a complaint that a passenger in a vehicle had put fireworks in a mailbox and set them
off. This action was observed by another motorist who obtained the plate number of the vehicle that the
subject was riding in. An appearance ticket for court was issued to the 19 year old male who was
responsible for this action. There were three Village Ordinance complaints: two concerning Solicitors and
one complaint about Illegal Dumping. The officer observed a vehicle pull up next to a garbage dumpster
and watched one of the occupants throw 2 plastic garbage bags into it. The vehicle then left at a high rate
of speed with its headlights off. The vehicle was stopped and it was found that the subject responsible did
not have permission from the owner of the property to place garbage in that dumpster. The 23 year old
male was issued an appearance ticket for court. There were no Vehicle and Traffic complaints. There were
eighty-one miscellaneous complaints handled by this department for the month of March.
Officer Lanning, Officer Steinmetz and I participated in the Tompkins County Annual Drug Quiz contest.
The full time officers worked 162.5 hours of overtime and the part-time officers worked 125.5 hours.
There was a total of $334 reported lost or stolen and $424 in property recovered for the month of March.
