HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Fire Department for March 2004104 CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT 194 Pleasant Grove Road Ithaca, NY 14850 (607) 257 -2377 Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report — March, 2004 After months of record call numbers we slowed down a little in March. For the month we ran 23 calls. This is a significant and well received break from our recent hectic months of calls. For the month we had 12 calls in the Village, 10 calls in the Town of Ithaca and went mutual aid once. We had two noteworthy calls last month. On April & we were called to Beebe Lake for a person trapped in the ice. We arrived to find a person with his leg entrapped between two large blocks of ice. Using technical rescue equipment we managed to quickly free the man's leg from the ice and with the assistance of the Ithaca Fire Department we used ropes and pulleys to move the man up the slope from the lake to the road. The patient was transported with possible leg injuries to the hospital. Our members acted quickly and safely on this call and the outcome was outstanding. The second call of note was a mutual aid response to Lansing the night of the Rose Inn fire. Cayuga Heights Fire Department members assisted at the scene of the fire with suppression activities and at a water tanker fill site for supply activities. Again training and our members willingness to do what needed to be done to accomplish the mission drew admiration from the other departments involved in this incident. I am very proud of our members. We had our annual elections on April 6a'. The slate of officers will be presented to the Village Board on April 12a'. We have a good group of officers for the upcoming year. All of last year's chief officers are back for the coming year. This accomplishes our goal of providing stability in the officer's ranks. Al] of us are looking forward to working closely with each other to accomplish the goals that we set for ourselves for 2004. We have one vacant officer's position, the 284 position. The resumes for the new officers for this year are attached to this report. The Annual Fire Department Banquet and Installation of Officers will be April 17 at the Ramada Inn starting at 6:00 p.m.. We received the bids last month from the companies interested in working with us on the possible replacement of Ladder 23I. We contacted the two vendors who took total exception to our bid and let them know that they were not being considered any longer in the bid process. The three remaining vendors all brought trucks to the fire station this past month for us to look at again. All three remaining vendors are waiting on our "HELP PREVENT FIRES" decision on this project with the understanding that if we decide to move forward with this project it could be May before a bid award is made. We also received a bid for the station exhaust system. Air Cleaning Systems of Latham, New York was the only company to submit a bid. They met the bid spec for the exhaust system with full compliance and came in below the price we have budgeted for this project. We hope to award a bid with the trustees approval at the April le meeting. We have one vacant bunker room available at this time. Firefighter Alex Traina got a job working for Mohawk Ambulance in the Albany area as an EMT and will be leaving us on the 10 of April. Alex has been an extremely active member of this department and will be sorely missed. His contribution in the past two years as a firefighter and Fire Company President has been an invaluable part to the success of the department. We will look to fill Alex's room after he leaves. Sincerely, Zte Tamborelle Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent EMERGENCY CALLS: TOTAL CALLS YEAR TO DATE: 91 Total Calls — 23 Fire Calls — 10 EMS Calls - 11 Total Mutual Aid — 1 Lansing - 1 Calls in the Village — 12 Calls in the Town — 10 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 3/9 — FAST Training 3/24 — Rose Inn Fire Critique 3/27 — ESIP EVOC Training 3/29 — CPR Class 4/3 — Recruit Training — Bum Tower 4/6 — Company Meeting and Annual Elections UPCOMING EVENTS: 4/14 — Fire Training 4/17 — Annual Banquet and Installation of Officers 4/21 — EMS Training — Documentation 4/29 — Fire Training 518 — Recruit Training — Extrication Training APPARATUS: All trucks are working well.
