HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Fire Department for Sept 2003CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT 194 Pleasant Grove Road Ithaca, NY 14850 (607) 257 -2377 , 2003 Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report — September, 2003 The call volume has not slowed down at all with the onset of autumn. In September we ran 46 calls. There were 15 fire calls, 27 EMS alarms and we went mutual aid 4 times. Mutual aid responses included 3 calls to Ithaca one to Lansing. This past month we ran 23 calls in the village and 19 calls in the Town of Ithaca. So far in the year 2003 we have had 371 calls. On the evening of September 26°i we were dispatched to Sheldon Road for an explosion. Units responded to the scene along with the police department. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud explosion. We arrived on scene to find the police department had secured the scene and an investigation found that a deer trap had been deployed in the back yard of the house. Thankfully it was nothing more serious then a trapped fawn and all of our fire units returned to service with a sigh of relief and a good chuckle. We met with representatives of the Town of Ithaca in late September to discuss replacing Ladder 231. We spoke about finances and needs. The meeting was very positive and the decision was made to move forward at this time in "specing" a truck. This means we are looking at prices and options. We are currently in contact with the three leading vendors of ladder trucks in this area (Seagrave, Pierce and American LaFrance). These three companies are currently working on specs for us with the understanding that we still need trustee approval to move into the next phase. We hope to move forward soon with this project and replace this piece of apparatus. Our New Recruit class has started its training. We held our first in house recruit training in September and many of the new members have been taking the New York State Basic Firefighter Class at the County Training Center. They are learning the basic skills to become a certified firefighter. Many of the members of the original recruit class, who completed the basic class last winter and the intermediate firefighter class over the summer, are now enrolled in the advanced firefighter class. This shows the commitment to training that these new members have. "HELP PREVENT FIRES" Our files grant has yielded very positive advancements at the fire station. We are still working on the paper files and Norma Manning is supervising this portion of the project. The paper files are being indexed and stored in the files storage room at the station. We have had our computer software upgraded and networked to the Assistant Chiefs and Rescue Directors computers. We have also added the computer in the Communications Room to the network, and after an in house training, will be entering run reports at the completion of every call. We are very excited about this. We have finished revising the Bunker Contract and will be going over it with the bunkers after presenting it to the Board of Trustees for approval. The bunkers are performing their duties very well. Sincerely, ' 'J George Tamborelle Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent EMERGENCY CALLS: TOTAL CALLS YEAR TO DATE: 371 Total Calls — 46 Fire Calls — 15 EMS Calls - 27 Total Mutual Aid — 4 Ithaca - 3 Lansing - 1 Calls in the Village — 23 Calls in the Town — 19 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 10/15 — Company Meeting 10/15 — Training — Hose Testing 10/18 — Open House 10/25 — Recruit Class 11/05 —Company Meeting We are currently making a training schedule for the next six months.
