To: The Honorable Walter Lynn
Members of the Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
From: Report of the Police Department for August 2003
For the month of August there were a total of 107 complaints reported to the police department and 2 motor
vehicle accidents investigated. There were a total of 69 traffic tickets issued and 18 parking tickets written.
During August there were no felony complaints. There were thirteen misdemeanors reported seven for
Petit Larceny, three for Criminal Mischief, one for Aggravated Harassment, one for Criminal Tampering
and one for Stalking. Three of the larcenies were reported when customers pumped gasoline into their
vehicles and left without paying. In all the incidents, the person responsible was contacted and returned to
pay. A resident reported her garbage can missing. A resident reported 2 bicycles were stolen from her
front yard. A business reported the theft of a money bag containing cash. The final larceny was the
reported theft of a pair of earrings. One criminal mischief case was the report of damaged mailboxes along
The Parkway. A total of 10 mailboxes were found to have been damaged. A resident reported that eggs
had been thrown at his front door. The final criminal mischief case was reported when a resident
discovered scratches along the side of her vehicle. The scratches appeared to have been caused by an
animal, possibly a dog, jumping numerous times up against the vehicle. The aggravated harassment case
involved a female complaining that an ex- boyfriend continues to send her cards in the mail. An attempt
was made by this department to contact the ex- boyfriend with negative results. The complainant will call
again if she receives any other cards. The criminal tampering case was reported when an officer observed
that the stop sign and post had been removed from an intersection. The post and sign were located farther
down the road and were replaced back. The stalking case was reported when a female stated that she was
having problems with an ex- boyfriend. He had been contacting her at her home and while she was
working; the latest incident taking place in the Village of Cayuga Heights. The female stated that he
followed her to a business and blocked her way with his vehicle, making threatening remarks to her. A
warrant was issued and the 35 year old male was arrested for stalking. There were ten violation complaints
for Disorderly Conduct. Nine of the complaints involved loud noise or loud music. All the persons
responsible were notified of the complaints and there were no further problems. The final disorderly
conduct case occurred when a landlord reported that her tenants had come home intoxicated, were speaking
very loudly, using obscene language and disturbing the neighbors. The complaint resulted in a 50 year old
female subject being arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. There were three Village
Ordinance complaints: two for dogs running loose and one for a report of fireworks. There were three
Vehicle and Traffic complaints: one for parking and two miscellaneous traffic problems. There were
seventy-eight miscellaneous complaints handles by the police department for the month of August. One of
the cases was a response to a domestic dispute which resulted in a 29 year old female being arrested for
harassment.
During the month of August Officer Lanning and myself attended a one day training update for the DARE
program. This department wishes to acknowledge and to thank everyone for the generous gifts and
donations given to Officer Cain and his family during his illness. The Police Department also extends its
sincere sympathies to Officer Steinmetz at the recent loss of his mother.
The full time officers worked 159.5 hours in overtime and the part-time officers worked 164.5 hours.
There was a total of $1,228 reported lost or stolen and $59 in property recovered for the month of August.
