HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Fire Department for May 2003J CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT 194 Pleasant Grove Road Ithaca, NY 14850 (607) 257 -2377 Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report — May, 2003 May has been a little busier the April with a two call increase, again we averaged more then a call a day. We ran more calls in the village this past month then we did in the town. Our EMS side was very busy and everybody always seems appreciative when our members respond to lend a helping hand in their time of need. We helped out our neighboring departments four times last month with two responses to Ithaca, one to Lansing, and one to the Airport. Our average member response for the month was 10.91 per call with an average time of response of 2.1 minutes. No other volunteer department in this county posts response numbers like this. Things may slow down a little in the summer months with vacations and students being away but I have not seen a slowdown in our performance yet. We did two school demonstrations in May. The first was held at the Cayuga Heights Elementary School for their annual "Night Out". Everybody had a great time with this, firefighters and community members alike. The kids got to play on the trucks while the parents talked with firefighters about opportunities with the department and fire prevention. Our second demo was held at the Dewitt Middle School on their career day. A group of members went to the middle school with three trucks and spoke with the students there about opportunities with the fire department and about careers in firefighting and emergency medical services. Both demonstrations went very well. The architects for the Sigma Chi project seemed a little skeptical about the requests that we had made for access to that structure so we arranged a demonstration on May 270i. We took Ladder 231 down to Sigma Chi and met with the architects and showed them how impossible access would be without the suggested improvements. They seemed very impressed with this demonstration and the plans that were submitted to the ZBA reflected the changes that we requested. Intense training continues throughout the summer months. LT Marshall Stocker put together an outstanding training on radio procedures at the end of May. We have several very interesting trainings planned for the month of June. We will be doing a training on building construction with a walkthrough of a house actually under construction so firefighters can see some of the new types of construction being used these days. We will be at the Tompkins County Airport on June 2lu to do a live bum with the Crasb/Fire/Rescue Unit in the simulator that the airport firefighters train on. 416/03 "HELP PREVENT FIRES" Finally our members will be helping on Sunday, June 22°d with a pancake breakfast to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Annual Relay for Life. Several of our fire department members are very involved with this project. The breakfast is a joint effort between the "Fog Nob Team" (the Dave Wall family of Newfield), Bangs Ambulance and the Cayuga Heights Fire Department. The breakfast will be held at the fire station from 8:00 am. until 1200 noon. Please feel free to come over for breakfast. Sincerely, / Fa Gedige Tamborelle Fire Chief / Fire Superintendent 4/6/03 EMERGENCY CALLS: TOTAL CALLS YEAR TO DATE: 209 Total Calls — 34 Fire Calls — 14 EMS Calls - 20 Total Mutual Aid — 4 Ithaca - 2 Lansing —1 Airport - I Calls in the Village — 20 Calls in the Town — 10 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 05/03 —Extrication Training in Newfield 05/04 — Recruit Class IV 05109 — Cayuga Heights Elementary School Carnival 05/14 — Company Meeting 05/16 — Dewitt Middle School Career Day Demonstration 05/21— Fire Training —Radio procedures 0527 — Demonstration with 231 at Sigma Chi 06/01— Ithaca Festival Demonstration UPCOMING EVENTS: 06/18 — Fire Training — Building Construction with walkthrough of house under construction 0621— Live burn with Tompkins County Crash Fire Rescue at the Airport 0622 — Breakfast for the American Cancer Society at the Fire Station 06/26— Rescue Training APPARATUS: All apparatus is in good working order.
