HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport of the Fire Department for Jan 2003CAYUGA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT 194 Pleasant Grove Road Ithaca, NY 14850 (607) 257 -2377 Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report — January, 2003 2003 started out with a bang for the Fire Department. We responded to 18 calls, including a structure fire, in the first four days of the New Year. We continued our busy streak ending up with 58 calls during January which makes this our busiest month in recent memory. In addition to the structure fire we had a car fire on Highland Road. The interesting aspect to this call was that the car was a prop in a fraternity "rush event ". Apparently every year the fraternity turns a car over in their driveway and beats it up with a pick -ax. This year they punctured the gas tank and the car ignited. Luckily no one was injured and I doubt we will see a repeat of this event next year. /! On January I Ph and IP, myself and FF Walter Buble attended a class titled, Legal Issues for the Volunteer Fire Service. This class, which is held at the NYS Fire Academy in Montour Falls is 16 hours long and is held over a single weekend. The class is aimed at Chief Officers as well as \, I/ Village Trustees and Mayors. The goal of the class is to increase the legal knowledge of the students as it relates to the volunteer fire service. Montour Falls is only 45 minutes away and the class costs $25 per person. I highly recommend that all of you attend this course and a Firefighter will drive you in a department vehicle should you decide to go. The class will be held again: May 7 -18, September 20 -21 and November 15 -16. would like to ask the Village Board for permission to sell Engine 204. The truck is a 1975 which is currently running as a reserve engine and we have spent almost $9,000 on maintenance and repairs in the last year. Within the next couple of years we will have to retrofit the truck to keep it legal. This will include enclosing the cab among other alterations. Once again we have been busy drilling. Firefighters Gabi Benel and Guy Turner put together an excellent training on ropes and knots which was held at the Ithaca Burn Tower. All of the members in attendance had a good time and learned a lot.
