From: Report of the Police Department for May 2001
For the month of May there were a total of 88 complaints reported to the police department and 2 motor
vehicle accidents investigated. There were a total of 83 traffic tickets issued and 31 parking tickets written.
During May there were two felony complaints received. One was a report of jewelry taken from a
residence and the other felony was the theta of a debit card. Both cases are still open and investigations
continuing. There were seven misdemeanor complaints reported: Four for Petit Larceny, one for Criminal
Mischief and two for Aggravated Harassment. Three of the reported Petit Larcenies occurred at Kendal of
Ithaca. Two were complaints of thefts from residents' rooms and the third was a theft from an unlocked
vehicle parked in the Kendal parking lot. The fourth Petit Larceny was the theft of a power drill from the
porch of a Fraternity. The Criminal Mischief complaint was a report of a pile of leaves set on fire in the
parking lot at Cayuga Heights School. One Aggravated Harassment was the report of receiving no- answer
phone calls. Two Cornell students who received an annoying message on their answering machine
reported the other Aggravated Harassment. As both students were leaving town in a week, they did not
want the complaint investigated. There were five Violations reported for the month of May: Four for
Disorderly Conduct and one for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Two of the Disorderly Conducts were
complaints about loud music. The subjects responsible turned off the music and no further action was
taken. A T -Cat driver who was having problems with two riders reported one Disorderly Conduct
complaint. Both riders agreed to stop their actions and the driver of the bus let them stay. The last
Disorderly Conduct case was a subject reported her doorbell ringing and no one was there. An officer
checked the area but no one was found. The Unlawful Possession of Marihuana occurred when an officer
observed a subject with marihuana which resulted in an arrest. There were five complaints involving
Village Ordinances. One was a report of a barking dog and two were requests for solicitor permits. The
other two complaints involved incidents at Sunset Park. Four subjects were arrested for being in the park
after hours and another subject was arrested for driving on the park lawn. There were five Vehicle and
Traffic complaints for the month; three for parking and two for moving violations. There were sixty-four
miscellaneous complaints handled by this department for the month of May. A 46 -year -old male was
arrested on a warrant for Harassment. Also during the month of May a threatening message was written in
a girl's bathroom at Cayuga Heights School on a Friday afternoon. A CHPD Officer and a New York State
Trooper with his dog searched the school building and nothing was found out of the ordinary. Officers
were at the school during school hours the following Monday and Tuesday to ensure that there were no
problems.
During the month of May Officer Lansing attended a 2 -week school for Motor Vehicle Collision
Investigations, which was held at the Ithaca Police Department. There was classroom instruction and
hands -on activities for in -depth accident reconstruction. Officer Cain attended a one -day school for Drug
Highway Interdiction/Hidden Compartments. This school instructed the officer in locating compartments
