You wonder what will happen each year that will challenge you and the staff at the police department.Well never could you have imagined what would take place this year and the effects it would have on a department.The aftermath of September 11'h will be with us forever.As it once was, will never be again. We knew after Columbine that safety measures for the schools would have to be changed.Police ideas of waiting for the swat team or special units would have to be a thing of the past. Officers now have to be taught a new and more aggressive approach. So we started out the year with Officers learning that the old way of thinking had to change when confronted with a crisis that involved a shooter coming into a school or other public place.Trainings were devised from the mistakes made at Columbine so we could give the service we were met to give to the public. Officers were sent to schools to learn new methods to handle these situations should they arise.Now a system is being put into place for us to handle these matters right away.With this came the schools wanting the police to help with writing r a school safety plan. Officer Lanning and Officer Steinmetz were assigned to help with this planning. Officer school sag assisted with the writing of the plan since he was the officer assigned to the schools to teach D.A.R.E.La. Officer assisted Lann with attended a class in Buffalo that dealt with school safety. This helped him in assisting the school in writing the safety policy. Officer Steinmetz,being one of the range instructors,took on the responsibility of going to trainings that would give him the knowledge necessary to train officers in this department on responding to these type of incidents.During the year he and Officer Lanning attended a school on active shooter.This school covered the information that would help teach other Officers how to prepare and handle incidents involving people that became involved with shootings at public places.Another school that Officer Steinmetz attended was selective fire school, which involved the use of other firearms besides our duty weapons. With all that on our minds and other tasks to get accomplished, along comes 9/11. With the events on 9/11/oI comes the reality that it can happen to us. The call for local police agencies to be a part of the homeland security came at once.Every day we would receive confidential messages from around the country from federal, state and local agencies. The State formed a terrorist task force and divided the state into zones.Now we will look for training in 2002 for the Officers on the street to heighten their awareness on combating terrorism.The Federal Government has recognized the need for the local law enforcement agencies to help them with homeland security.It appears another computer will soon be supplying us with daily information about terrorist activity and other concerns. As I start another year as Chief I must say that the staff in the police department has made the job a pleasant one.The men and women of the Cayuga Heights Police Department continue to take pride in doing the job necessary to make this department one to be proud of. Even with the extra responsibility of more schools and training they continue to keep up with the everyday duties.We have still supplied the schools with the programs and appearances they have requested. We appear to be getting closer to a better working relation with the Kendal staff so that:we can give the residents the police services they need and expect.The work with the 911-dispatch center has been going at a pace slower than expected and has taken a lot of time from many people's schedules.The end of the year showed promise with the hiring of a new director at the center. I only hope that the time and efforts put forth by the concerned public safety officials will pay off in 2002.In closing I can say that I look forward to the challenges of the new era and to serving the citizens and staff of the Village of Cayuga Heights.
