HomeMy WebLinkAboutPolice 03-2013 Monthly Board Letter.pdf April 3, 2013 To: The Honorable Mayor Supron Members of the Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Re: Report of the Police Department for March, 2013 In the month of March the police department received 315 calls for service. In addition to these calls, 78 uniform traffic tickets were issued and 14 parking tickets were written. A breakdown of the calls for service is as follows: There was 1 felony burglary complaint in which a rental property manager reported an attempted break -in to an apartment building he was overseeing. No items were reported missing, although there were signs of attempted entry. There are no suspects in this case. 3 misdemeanor complaints were handled including scheme to defraud and 2 incidents of larceny. Of the two larceny complaints 1 involved 2 village street signs being taken from Texas Lane and Northway Road. The DPW was notified and the signs were replaced. There are no leads at this time. The remaining larceny complaint was reported as a stolen bicycle. The complainant located the missing bicycle the next day. The incident of fraud included a fraudulent phone call made to a resident stating that they had won a lottery and would need to send a specific amount of money in order to claim their pri ze. The complainant has not reported any further contact from the suspect company. 6 penal law violations were handled including 2 for harassment, 2 for drug possession, 1 for disorderly conduct and 1 for trespassing. The first harassment call came in from an employee of Kendal of Ithaca in which the complainant states she is being harassed by an ex-boyfriend. The investigation of this case is still active. The second harassment complaint involved a juvenile receiving multiple requests for interaction via internet gaming. Necessary advice was rendered to the parent and no other information has been reported. 1 of the drug possession complaints came in as an odor of marijuana being present in the college townhouses. A college age student was found to be in possession of marijuana and an arrest was made. The second incident took place after an odor of marijuana was detected during a traffic stop. The driver forfeited paraphernalia and traffic violations were issued. An offense of disorderly conduct was committed during an employee dispute at a local business. Possible charges may be filed pending further investigation. A trespass of property was reported by the on duty officer involving two college students who were attempting to climb the Jessup Rd. fence. A no trespass sign was clearly visible and the officer rendered necessary advice to the students. There were 6 calls for Local Law violations. 3 for dog control, 2 for noise and 1 for soliciting without a permit. 2 of the 3 dog control complaints were reported as loose dogs in the area. The officers on duty were able to make contact with the pet owners and warnings were issued. The 3 rd complaint involved a very aggressive dog chasing a pedestrian who was running on village roads . After the dog owner was identified and contacted a local law citation was issued due to the extreme fear the dog caused. The 2 separate noise complaints were both reported as loud music coming from a local fraternity house. Officers responded and found the fraternity to be conducting a “mixer”. The house president was issued a local law violation. The soliciting without a permit complaint was reported as a suspicious person going door to door. The suspect vehicle was identified by the on duty officer and contact was made with a person selling meat products. A verbal warning was issued by the officer stating that a solicitor permit would need to be obtained for future sales within the Village of Cayuga Heights. In summary a total of 6 arrests were made. 1 for unlawful possession of marijuana, 1 for Local Law dog control, 1 for local law noise, 1 for suspended registration and 2 for execution of active warrants. 6 Motor vehicle accidents were investigated, 1 of which involved a deer. There were 2 additional deer incidents which occurred. Both involved deer tags being found on deceased deer within the village. Tags were turned over to the Cornell deer management program. Over the course of this month police department members took part in the following trainings and events: Officer James Landon attended and successfully completed the Instructor Development Training. Sergeant Jerry Wright attended the Law Enforcement Active Shooter Emergency Response course. Officer James Manning attended the Colt Rifle Armor class in order to maintain his status as firearms instructor. Lastly, Chief Steinmetz, Officer Chad Lansing, and Police Clerk Jackie Carr attended the annual Cops Kids and Toys luncheon at the Ramada Inn in Lansing. A special thank yo u was expressed to the Village of Cayuga Heights for allowing the program to hold its monthly meetings at the Village Hall. The full time officers worked a total of 32.5 hours of overtime and the part time officers worked a total of 178 hours.
