Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – August, 2012
August was an extremely busy month with 58 calls for the department. There were 31
calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 21 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 6 mutual aid
requests. We had 26 EMS runs and 32 fire calls. During the month of August we
responded to several calls for the odor of gas in the residence. We do experience an
increase in this type of call at the start of the academic year. Many times people move
into apartments and discover that the pilot lights on their stoves are not functioning
properly and slowly leaking. These problems are usually resolved by lighting the pilots.
Late in the month we responded to a call for a gas problem at a home. Responding units
arrived to find that, while working with a backhoe, a contractor had struck the natural gas
meter at a home. The resulting break in the line resulted in a major gas leak. We quickly
set up hose lines and evacuated the building and several nearby buildings. NYSEG
arrived and shut down the gas. In the middle of the month there was a severe lighting
storm that moved through the area. We were called to a home in the village that had been
struck by lightning. Luckily there were no injuries and investigated found that there was
no fire at the home. On August 30 th we were requested mutual aid to Lansing for a
vehicle fire on Rt. 13. We responded to the call to find a flatbed truck fully involved with
fire. We rapidly suppressed the fire and assisted in getting the road reopened.
Training through the month mainly consisted of getting everybody back up to speed after
the summer. Our first training of the month was on ropes and systems. We went to the
DPW yard and used the hillside to set up low angle rescue scenarios. We set up the rope
systems for lowering rescuers and then hauling victims up the hillside. This was a very
dynamic training and people really enjoyed it. We are doing a lot of work with the new
members to get through checklists. Late in the month we did training on building
construction that included a walkthrough of a local home under construction. This
allowed us to see what materials contractors are using to build homes.
We have had several problems with L231 over the summer. These problems were with
the hydraulic lift pistons on the ladder of the truck. The vehicle was out of service for 10
days in August. We now have the truck back and the issues seem to be resolved. We are
starting to look at possible replacement vehicles for 242, our 1998 Chevrolet pickup
truck. We are planning on using the Hanselman Trust to finance this project.
As we move into the fall we look forward to several public events at the station. We will
hold our annual open house in October during fire prevention month. October is also the
time we try to get to the schools to do fire prevention talks with the young children at
CHES and NE Elementary. We are also doing fire prevention lectures with our
fraternities and sororities in the village. We have reserved a date in November for the
CHES auction at the station. We are asking the board for permission to host this event.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
